Apple’s next-gen iPhone’s OLED display is on schedule; larger and higher-end display than Samsung’s S8

“Today we learn that Samsung Display is expected to start shipping OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone in June as planned, brushing off market rumors that the launch of the first OLED iPhone could be delayed due to supply shortage,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “In fact the Korean source states that panel assembly will start in May before shipping starts in early June.”

“Industry sources say that concerns over the tricky panel production may have been exaggerated to create rumors about the new iPhone’s possible delayed launch,” Purcher reports. “Jang Hyun-jun, an analyst at UBI Research told the Korean publication that ‘Apple is asking for a higher-end display panel than the one used for Samsung’s Galaxy S8.'”

Purcher reports, “According to the analyst, Apple hopes for the screen to cover the entire front body in contrast to the Galaxy S8’s display area ratio at 83.6 percent, along with more aggressive curvature.”

MacDailyNews Take: Hopefully all of this is true!

Maybe we’ll get our next-gen iPhones this year after all!

    1. We just have to wait and see, Herself. I fervently share your hope that the “TouchID on the back” rumor is not true. I would much rather have a “chin” on the iPhone to house TouchID (and a home button) than to sacrifice user experience seeking the Holy Grail of a full display.

        1. yes nice piece of lateral thinking which makes total sense when you combine it with the recent views that placing it in that position would be about as awkward a location for your finger you could imagine. If you are going to locate it on teh back then surely it would be located higher though clearly not in the ridiculous position the S8 sports milometers from the camera.

Anyway clearly Apple would only put it on the back as a temporary fall back position should in-screen touch ID not be ready for prime time. That might be an indirect result of the new all over screen but not a planned one. To be fare to them they aren’t going to make a different design with a lower bezel just because of that problem to last but a year with all the problems and costs that would cause. But hopefully it wont be necessary to locate to the back at all.

    2. Apple wants to merge the fingerprint sensor with the screen. The issue now is whether Apple will be able to actually do it this year or not.

Apple can not keep making the same designs for fourth year in a row, so they have to make iPhone 8 a new design. I guess that Apple would prefer to make one more year of iPhone 6/s/7 designs to wait until they will be able to merge the fingerprint sensor with the screen, but they just can not.

      Lets see what will happen.

No shit. It isn’t hard ti figure out who would be behind such an effort, just ask yourself who’s DNA celebrates stealing other’s IP, bribing officials, use of software to thwart benchmark comparisons, etc.? See, I told you it was easy.

    1. The clueless supply chain genius chose to go with that supplier.

It seems all western corporate leaders are clueless about ip theft caused by reckless outsourcing. But the usual fanboys here still believe Apple can do nothing wrong. TPP is evil but Apple using backstabbing asian suppliers is just honky dory. Hypocrites.

  2. I sincerely hope they relocate the power button back to the top. The way it is now, when you go to squeeze off a picture using the UP volume button, if you squeeze just a tiny bit too hard your thumb shuts off the power! Right in the middle of a photo moment.
