Apple releases tvOS 10.2.1 beta 4

“Apple is rolling out the fourth tvOS 10.2.1 beta for developer testing on Apple TV,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac. “The update will likely focus on bug fixes and security improvements ahead of any new features potentially planned for tvOS 11 later this year.”

“The most recent Apple TV software update includes a new fast scrolling method and SDK improvements,” Hall reports. “Apple also recently updated its Apple TV Remote app with Siri Remote features to work with iPad.”

Hall reports, “Public beta versions of iOS and macOS are available, but tvOS and watchOS betas are only available through Apple’s developer program.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve been using our Apple TV more now since we’ve dumped cable for PlayStation Vue. Granted, we’re in the PSV app 95% of the time, but we are using the Apple TV more!

It’s too bad Apple doesn’t have their own streaming service, but we’re enjoying Sony’s at least.

  1. Just dumped Direct TV ($115/mo) for

    1. HD antenna ($79); I was able to use the Direct TV dish mount by inserting an extender. I just connected the dish end cable to the antenna and the other end into the HomeRunHD

    2. HomeRunHD (Silicon Dust: 1 channel $99, 2 channels $179)
connect cable to HomeRunHD and connect HomerRunHD to router using enclosed ethernet cable.

    3. Download Channels from AppleTVstore. HomeRunHD streams antenna input to Apple TV through Channels app.

    4. Download Playstation View app (chose $40/mo package)
use this for all the other cable channels we watch (HGTV, Food Network, ESPN, NFL channel etc – solid package)

    5. Download Hulu (commercial free: $12/month)

With Channels, everything runs through AppleTV – no changing video modes.

Current costs: $52/year plus $300 installation cost.

We will save $500 the first year and about $700 a year after that to get flexibility and freedom in what services we choose to use or not use.

    1. How does it work if you have more than one TV? Can you pause live TV and access/set up DVR recordings from another TV/Apple TV or does each TV need a HomeRunHD box?

  2. Just started using HomeRun Primes with DVR it’s great. Channels with AppleTV and PLex from my stored Movies and TV shows I’m in heaven. Tossed iTunes, no my library searches, no binge watching, no show info or related genres or actor searches. Apple better get on the stick otherwise they are going to miss out on the living room experience.
