iPhone ownership hits all-time high in the United States of America

“Apple currently has more iPhone users in the United States than at any point in history, according to market research firm comScore,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.

“There are now over an estimated 85.8 million iPhone owners aged 13 and older in the United States, based on a three-month average ending December 2016, according to comScore MobiLens Plus,” Rossignol reports. “Apple’s latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models accounted for approximately 15 percent of that total.”

“iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s models, including their respective Plus-sized versions, remain Apple’s most popular smartphones in the U.S. with an estimated 48.4 percent share of the overall installed base,” Rossignol reports. “Meanwhile, an estimated 17.8 percent of the users are still using an iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, or iPhone 5c.”

    1. Right, because we know everyone of those 326M people own smartphones, including babies and the elderly, so if they don’t own an iPhone, we can chalk that down to not being “intelligent” enough.

      {much sarcasm}

  1. It’s good to hear there are some loyal Americans supporting an American brand smartphone. I suppose the rest the Americans own Samsung smartphones. It’s too bad the iPhone will continue to lose global market share percentage but I know it can’t be helped. As long as there are $50 to $100 Android smartphones available the iPhone doesn’t stand a chance of gaining back any market share.

      1. If you’re saying the top (most affluent) 86 million are exclusively iPhone users you’ll have to also explain how so many high end Android phones are sold in the U.S.

  2. Good graphics and shows how quickly phones are swapped out for new versions. The release and success of the iP6 skews the numbers a bit but over all a 2-3 year cycle. So a sizable chunk of those 86 million are going to be getting a new phone in the next 12 months.

  3. What brilliant analysis!. Every second more iPhones are sold. Ergo, every second after the iPhone (or any successful, regularly updated product) is released to the market, this headline would be true.

    Ironically, Apple is at great risk of seeing stagnation and decline in Mac ownership specifically because Apple hasn’t updated most of its Mac models in years, forcing many to move on to other platforms when their old Macs need replacing. The only thing preventing dramatic industry underperformance is the fact that Apple is still in the process of expanding its geographic distribution, so aged Mac designs appear “new” in emerging markets.
