“I laughed at Apple’s wireless AirPods when they were first announced. I sat on Twitter and shared the same jokes as everyone else, and never dreamed they’d be in my ears. ‘They look stupid,’ I thought, and everyone seemed to agree,” Tom Warren writes for The Verge. “It’s with much regret that I’m now using AirPods as my headphones every day, but I still think they look stupid. Others do, too, apparently, because people keep staring at me as if I’m from outer space.”
“I tried a pair during a recent work trip and I was surprised at how easy they linked to the iPhone despite the lack of wires. And the battery charging case is just clever,” Warren writes. “Untangling headphones is a headache, and feeding them through your jacket or having them tugged out of your ears can be frustrating.”
“All of these first-world problems are solved with the AirPods, but at a weird expense,” Warren writes. “As this is new technology, most people haven’t seen a pair of AirPods where I live, let alone tried them. I receive puzzled looks on a daily basis, and I’m fairly sure most people think I’m wearing some wild earrings or making some kind of statement by cutting the wires of the iconic Apple EarPods.”

As for the AirPods looking alien: Tape a pair of wires on the ends of each and you’ll see that they look very much like the type of earphones that everyone is very used to seeing by now (which, for those who remember, we weren’t used to seeing before iPod – people thought those looked “alien,” too). I’d consider them if they weren’t so bright white, screaming look at me! I might buy them when they are black (and don’t have to pay a third party to make them black).

AirPods are one of the few things Apple has gotten right recently. They really are a joy to use.
I am straddling a fence on them. Very handy, but they do remind me of a cigarette hanging out of the ear.
I wonder if these same folks had a hang up about that time long ago when their phone had a cord attached to it? Lol slow news day.
I hand painted mine with acrylics – I do love that Apple unwittingly made them so customisable – and the rat’s nest of wires is banished to the parts bin.

While traveling through Hong Kong in the 1980s I was envious to see people listening to their Sony Walkmans with wireless earbuds, tether-free. What a simple, great idea! I figured it would not be long before we saw them in the USA. But I was wrong. It is surprising how long it has taken. Now this crybaby, Tom Warren, is whining because he thinks they make him look funny? Dude, did you ever think how stupid those wires made you look? (Nevermind the hassle of them getting tangled all the time, not to mention caught on things.) Shall we talk about “defining deviancy down”? Geez, Louise, Tom, figure it out, look on the bright side. And stop complaining!
One more thing, Tom: you don’t have to wear them.

Airpods look fine. This will be normal in no time.
a follower would feel self-conscious wearing them, worrying what everyone else thinks. A leader wouldn’t care what anyone else thinks and sets the trend. In a year they will look totally normal and cool. I love my airpods and think those twisted wires look stupid. The airpods look like the future not the past.
Probably no different than the Bluetooth earpieces. When they first came out you looked like a knob wearing them. Eventually people got used to seeing them and no longer give a second glance.
That being said… they would be a lot lot noticeable if they were black, but I think that’s sort of why they aren’t. Apple wants them to be noticed and they want people to recognize them as an Apple product.
I’ve yet to see anyone wearing them, on campus or otherwise, but I do wear mine all the time, without a tinge of self-consciousness. As usual I see myself being a trendsetter, the world will catch up eventually…
Yeah, well… When Jabras and other Bluetooth headsets hit the market, I thought all those people walking around talking to themselves must be schizophrenics. Nope! Just new tech. Get used to it.
At least the AirPods are recording everything in their vicinity. (Hello Google).
