Apple’s new Clips app could help businesses break into video on social media

“Apple’s newest video app Clips, released in early April, makes it easy for professionals to create mobile videos with transcribed text and effects,” Conner Forrest writes for TechRepublic. “Clips was created with social media in mind, and it could help social media experts and marketers more readily generate video content for their brands.”

“Videos can be captured within the Clips app, or users can import existing video clips or photos from their device’s library,” Forrest writes. “Using the pinch and drag functionality that iOS is known for, users can add a zoom or panning effect for a little bit of flair.”

“Live Titles, which automatically transcribes text on the screen while you speak, is the core feature for professionals in Clips. Using Live Titles, businesses could easily create product demonstrations, or how-to videos, as well as creating video that can be watched in an office setting with the sound off,” Forrest writes. “Clips has streamlined the Share Sheet, making it much easier to share content with frequent contacts. If Apple decides to roll out the changes to all of iOS, it could provide more capacity for productivity among enterprise iOS users.”

  1. Yep, we made our first video Facebook ad this weekend with clips. Worked well, though some of the features weren’t entirely self-explanatory (I kept looking for a timeline like other Apple video apps). In the end we figured it out without too much effort and were very satisfied with our video.

If Apple is listening a few issues: We wanted to use a video we’d recorded on the iPhone, and though Clups would let us pull the video from the Library it kept stripping the audio. That was very frustrating. Apparently this doesn’t happen if you take the video from within Clips.

Also, I can tell that the options for tags, etc, will wear thin quickly. That is, there aren’t very many. I hope they update the app with more features!

  2. One would think it isn’t a finished app yet. Remember the old days when useful programs (that’s what we called them, back then) were the company’s claim to fame. They certainly aren’t going out of their way marketing it. Which could make sense. The Apple way lately seems to be to let the users do all the bug-finding in their software.

    1. Most development done today is an iterative process where they send out a minimum viable product first and then periodically (usually every two weeks) add features, fix bugs, etc and send it out to the world when it’s ready to go. This allows companies to get frequent feedback and means they can focus on exactly what customers want.

The days of “shipping a product with zero bugs” is gone. Eveyone developing software today are finding a LOT of bugs internally, but with the speed of development, there will always be bugs found by customers.

  3. Like the idea..*however text titles stay throughout the entire video rather than just appearing when you want them to appear or disappearing at a designated spot. Same goes for the Tags–why not give the ability to say drop in the ‘circle’ at a specific point in the scrub and then have it go away at another specific point–rather it shows up in the beginning of the clip and continues to the end?
