Apple’s new iPad is actually more than ‘just’ an iPad Air

iFixIT published another of its interesting Apple product teardowns today, this time taking the all new iPad 5 apart, but the way this is being reported ignores big differences,” Jonny Evans writes for Apple Must.

“You see, what’s happened is that iFixIt has basically claimed the iPad 5 is ‘just’ a rebadged iPad Air,” Evans writes. “But what the headline-chasing almost depth-free media claims misses the biggest difference between them.”

“It’s the processor: You see, iPad 5 uses an A9 processor (admittedly that’s an older chip), while the iPad Air 1 used an A7 and iPad Air 2 boasted an A8 chip,” Evans writes.

Evans writes, “That’s a big difference, not only this but the new iPad has a newer graphics processor and the M9 motion coprocessor.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s new iPad, starting at $329, is a helluva deal; one we’ve been pining to see from Apple:

iPads are too expensive relative to the perceived competition and Apple has obviously done a piss-poor job of marketing the iPad family (read: clearly explaining to the hoi polloi why they want an iPad over an Amazon or other Android tablet).

Sticker price is the biggest reason why iPad sales struggle to return to growth (the next biggest reason is that iPads’ useful lives last so damn long, they’re not rapidly replaced).

We would have purchased iPads for family members this year if they had been updated as they should have been for the holiday season and if the prices were a bit more palatable. Yes, we know what an iPad offers. Yes, we know they’re worth the money Apple’s asking for today; even being last year’s models. But, Apple should really do the math and consider making certain hardware more affordable in exchange for the backend revenue and increased mindshare and market share that will deliver. — MacDailyNews, January 6, 2017

  1. “Apple’s new iPad, starting at $329, is a helluva deal; one we’ve been pining to see from Apple”

Whatever happened to the MDN mantra of “Apple makes premium products for premium users at premium prices”?

    1. The iPad is no longer a premium product. Apple had a history of reducing the cost of its computers when it could over the years.

The iPad is priced fairly now. The iPad mini’s pricing, however, perplexes me.

      1. I’m not so sure about that. Apple does consider all its products to be premium. Unlike decades ago when Apple was miles ahead of everyone else, today there is no product that Apple sells which is the best bargain. Apple has a lot of price competition and because Timmy cares so much about iOS, he’s adjusting to it. But because Timmy doesn’t care at all about the Mac pipeline, no prices have been adjusted on the stale hardware that Apple is trying to sell. It’s pathetic.

The iPad Mini is more expensive than the iPad because Apple thinks it has no competition in that size. Maybe they are right, maybe wrong, but cost to produce isn’t even a consideration to a corporation. It’s all about maximizing profit with the current Apple leadership. Sensible value-based pricing isn’t important. Apple will take advantage of users if they think they can extract more cash from you.

        1. Your assumptions are pathetic.

          Clearly not an Apple consumer.
The way I feel it, you don’t have any recent (last decade) Apple products.

And you are in touch with your pal Timmy… And he’s telling you all of this. Wow. Well, you have to leave. Go were tech giants doesn’t squeeze more cash from their consumer and come back with the great news my friend. and instruct us once again…

Time have change, MDN is a mastertroll hangout now… With trolls that are frustrated not being able to purchase Apple products… There is a sub for you on reddit. Trust me they all crank each other out.

    2. The mantra isn’t even true half the time these days, the Mac Pro being the worst example (3-generations-old technology remaining at premium prices for users who somehow believe it’s still a premium product).

The beancounters have run rampant at Apple. It doesn’t matter what AAPL is trading for; that’s stupidly short-sighted Wall Street analyst thinking that MDN keeps (legitimately) harping on, and has zero bearing on whether they’re doing right by their customers.

    3. The iPad Pro is the premium tablet for premium users. The new iPad is a play to keep entry level users up to speed with the latest processors. By upgrading the original iPad Air hardware with iPhone 6s level processing power, Apple is providing an inexpensive way for new users and users of older iPads to stay current with the iOS apps ecosystem.

    1. Yes, this is what passes for supply chain genius these days.

The days when Apple would release new exclusive device capabilities in really fun colors and form factors is gone. Tim might be even more boring than Amelio.

  2. Haters gonna hate… I switched from android to iOS years ago and haven’t looked back. Everything just works. I lack the patience and the tech savvy to deal with android bugs and hiccups. I’m by no means well off financially but I’ll shell out an extra Benjamin just because I know these products work well. Maybe android has improved in the last 5 years. I don’t know and I don’t care enough to switch back.
