Apple pulls over-the-air iOS 10.3 update for iPhone 5 and 5c

“After a few hours of availability, Apple pulled the over-the-air iOS 10.3 update for the iPhone 5 and 5c, though the legacy devices can still be updated through iTunes on a Mac or PC,” Mike Wuerthele reports for AppleInsider.

“Why the move was made is not yet clear,” Wuerthele reports. “There is seemingly no swell of users complaining about failings of the update on social media, nor any indication of a large amount of failed updates on the older phone models with the 32-bit A6 processor.”

“Apple’s latest beta release of iOS skips version 10.3.1, and goes straight to version 10.3.2,” Wuerthele reports. “It also has no iPhone 5 or 5c binaries for download.”

  1. Hey, 5’s and 5c’s are just fine for my teenagers – and, frankly, they’d be fine for me too if I didn’t “have” to have the latest and greatest (people expect their Apple consultant to be up-to-date on things like that).

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. But if it won’t run the latest iOS version, it’s broke.

  2. It’s entirely possible that the 32-bit binary of iOS 10.3 got corrupted and wasn’t performing properly on older hardware. It makes no sense to drop support until iOS 11, but maybe ther was an issue with the ÔTA update. iTunes seems to be providing the correct updates.

  3. Re: MDN’s take-
Of course, because everyone should blindly upgrade and hand over money to Apple for every update to a product line, whether the upgrade is needed or not.
While great for Apple, not necessarily so great for Apple’s customers.

  4. I sold my 5, when the 7 came out. I keep a 4 year cycle. The 5s is very sold. The best 4 year old model yet. It takes everything tossed at it. But be the 64bit code. The 5 is pretty tired by now.

  5. I updated (or attempted to update 4 iPads for my church, (for in ear mixer control). I have 2 that did NOT update to iOS 10.3. They are a 4th Gen device with the Model #A1458. Has anyone had experience with this? what might be the cause? They are listed as compatible in the info that I can find.
