Record live TV without a cable subscription

1. A 4th Generation Apple TV
2. A Subscription to SlingTV, DirecTV Now or PlayStation Vue
3. An HD Antenna
4. An HDHomeRun Connect Box
5. The Channels App for Apple TV

Based on my experience, if you have all these pieces, your Apple TV can serve as the way you watch TV, period. You won’t need to jump between inputs…

    Apple TV (4th Gen)
    DirecTV Now & PlayStation Vue (until DTVN gets DVR)
    OTA HD Antenna
    Channels App
    HDHomeRun Extend
    Plex Media Server with DVR (Record OTA Stuff)

    1. Do you have any information on where the Channels app will save recordings to? I currently use it for live TV, and Plex DVR, which works pretty well, but it would be interesting to see what Channels comes up with for the DVR.

    2. The channels app is dependent on the HDHomerun, as a matter of fact it only works with the Silicondust HD tuners, the
      the channels DVR is $8/month, plex pass $39.00 annual or $119 life time…..

  2. I use a Tablo tuner box with a connected USB hard drive. It costs $5 a month for access to their TV guide so you can program channels to record using either your iOS device, or the Apple TV app. The iPhone and iPad apps provide more functionality than the Apple TV app.
