Gene Munster: Apple’s next-gen iPhone will cause paradigm shift

“Apple’s the next version of the iPhone will lead to a ‘paradigm shift,'” with augmented reality as its foundation, said Gene Munster, managing partner at VC firm Loop Ventures,” Chantel McGee reports for CNBC.

“Augmented reality — which differs from virtual reality in that it is not completely immersive — will be the key to not just Apple’s future, but the future of tech,” McGee reports. “That shift will ultimately be good for Apple’s stock, he said.”

McGee reports, “‘You start to get more comfortable when you put together the services side of the business on top of the augmented reality side,’ Munster said.”

  1. ET News rumors hint that Apple is interested in chamfered glass in order to return to a more fully rounded edge appearance on all sides.

The overhyping of Augmented Reality features continues as if multiple layers of display was a new concept. But most reliable rumor roundups (Like MacRumors) indicate evolutionary hardware changes, unless you consider an OLED display to be revolutionary. Samsung and Sony have done OLED for years.

  2. Augmented reality for me is to quietly receive notifications, or answers if you will, on my eyeglasses which doesn’t encroach on my space or others around me.

Secondarily, I want verbal notices to go to my hidden earpiece, which I need anyway because of hearing problems.

iPhone sound notifications are so “passe.”

  3. Paradigm shift? I love the way these fortunetellers throw around these fancy terms about things they know absolutely nothing about. As an Apple product user all I’m expecting is something that will be useful to me even in a small way. These people sure do get carried away over even the smallest bit of news. Augmented reality built into iOS should be attractive to the average user as there’s no need for any extra equipment to be useful. Smartphone users don’t need to be fully immersed in anything while walking down streets and on subway platforms. Users immersion into smartphones is already bad enough as it is.

I can’t even fathom Apple’s P/E getting anywhere near 20 because Apple never gets treated like Netflix or Amazon or Microsoft in terms of value. I’m not sure why but recent history says it’s rather unlikely. Especially if Apple continues to depend upon the iPhone for such high revenue. I think Apple needs some alternate revenue streams to boost the company’s value much higher. I’m satisfied with Apple’s value right now and if Apple gives higher dividends I’ll be that much more grateful. No need to get greedy.

  4. Gene certainly must realize that the MacBook Pro with touchbar is already an augmented reality machine. Just spend a little time with it changing context with changes in software apps and system level control, seamlessly. If anyone has not seen a demonstration of this computer, they should get to an Apple Store and take a look.

  5. Gene Munster, continuing his irrelevance since 1984. Oh, and Apple will launch a TV – it will just happen to be 5.8-inches in size and will be called the iPhone 8.

  6. Yes of course, a paradigm shift, just like the Apple Watch that would monitor our vital signs and blood glucose, the “we cracked it” breakthrough TV product that would revolutionize the industry, the secret project Apple Car that would be in every driveway by 2020. Sorry Mr. Cook (and your super-charged product pipeline), I’m not buying it anymore.

The original iPhone was a paradigm shift, the rest has been nothing but PR bullshift intended to levitate share prices.

  7. @Meeks — “Apple is a phone company…” SAY WHAT???
Apple is a service company whose products support its services and their products are top in their field — when you’re “holding” you know it a premium Apple product that just works (mostly) with its exceptional services that no other tech company can match in the pro-sumer market. Right Microsoft? Samsung? LG? etc…

  8. After today’s unimaginative and lackluster announcements how can anybody be bullish? The time to be bullish is IF, and only IF they release something groundbreaking. After today’s flub that looks less and less promising.

It’s like there is a cog in the machine. Maybe they are preoccupied with Apple Campus, or maybe the employees are just “phoning-it-in”. Whatever the case, someone or something needs to inspire.
