IHS analyst: Apple’s revolutionary 5.8-inch OLED iPhone to have flat display

“Apple is widely expected to launch an iPhone with a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display later this year, made possible by slimmer bezels and no Home button,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors. “And while some reports have claimed the screen will be curved like the Galaxy S7 edge, a growing number of sources expect a flat display. ‘We anticipate Apple will adopt a flat implementation of OLED design on their special iPhone model, which is analogous to the current 2.5D glass design,’ IHS Markit analyst Wayne Lam told MacRumors.”

“Much like the recently announced LG G6, we anticipate a touchscreen with a new longer aspect ratio design to take advantage of higher coverage area of the iPhone in its entirety. This new design language is expected to become the trend for 2017, as we all anticipate Samsung’s reveal later this month,” he added,” Rossignol reports. “Lam is referring to the LG G6’s 5.7-inch LCD display with a 2:1 aspect ratio, meaning the screen’s length is double the size of its width. iPhones have a 16:9 aspect ratio. Leaked pictures of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 reveal a similarly longer OLED display with slim bezels and no physical home button.”

Rossignol reports, “KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Chinese research firm TrendForce have also recently said they expect Apple’s next flagship iPhone to have 2.5D cover glass, which refers to the slightly curved edges that the front of iPhones have had since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2014.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is likely because curved displays, like Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge, are gimmicks in search of functionality. If Apple made a curved-edge iPhone, it would be for a meaningful reason, not just Samsung’s “Hey, look what we can do it in limited quantities, but we don’t really do anything useful with it, but buy it anyway, you know, because this one doesn’t explode” stupidity.

    1. Nor in home TV’s. Unless you are sitting very close. From average viewing distances it makes no sense. 35mm movie projection has mostly been on flat surfaces for a reason. (With exceptions like Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome screen from another era.) A bankrupt Shamscam unnovation that signifies nothing.

    2. The Samsung commercials show it as being useful when the Edge is placed face down on a table. But why would anyone do that? I always have the display up so that I can see new notifications, etc., in addition to my desire to avoid scratching the display (no sapphire yet!).

MDN got this one right – gimmick. But the sad thing is that, based upon unfounded speculation by bloggers and analysts facing deadlines and desperate for clicks, some people will perceive a flat display on an iPhone 8 to be a failure for some reason.

      1. If it follows the usual Samsung functionality of instantly muting the phone when face down w/o having to fiddle with any settings, having the edge light up is a useful feature.

  1. Samsung is the infinite numbers of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters. Just this time with engineers and computers. Hoping to accidentally invent the next great thing.

Too bad Samsung mostly invents useless gimmicks. The curved TV screen is one, now the curved display edges. It will be impossible to keep reflections off the display.
