“A new battery technology has been developed by a team led by the original creator of lithium-ion battery, promising safer batteries that can hold three times as much power —and charge in minutes, rather than hours,” Mike Wuerthele reports for AppleInsider.
“A team from the University of Texas, led by 94-year-old John Goodenough has developed what is being called an ‘all-solid-state’ lithium-ion battery cell,” Wuerthele reports. “Batteries constructed using the new technology are noncombustible, have a long cycle life, and boast much faster rates of charge and discharge.”
“The technology is scalable to nearly all potential applications including the iPhone, the MacBook Pro, large energy banks like needed in a car, or something like the Tesla PowerWall,” Wuerthele reports. “The University of Texas Office of Technology Commercialization is actively negotiating license agreements with multiple companies in the battery industry.”

I do not understand why John Goodenough never won a nobel prize in chemistry. Maybe this one will bring it if it replaces all current batteries. It’s only fitting g that the creator of li-on cells is the one to finally make a breakthrough.
I suppose they’re taking their time about approving it.
After all, last time he was li-on about it.

This is the fifth? battery breakthrough that i have heat about in the last five years. None have arrived yet. I’m not holding my breath
I think the point is that this is the first viable one, since there are commercialisation contracts already being negotiated.
Batteries don’t store power. They store energy. There is a difference. Check your high school physics syllabus.
I’ve had backlash from attempting to point out to physics ‘professionals’ that the word ‘light’ refers only to the human visible spectrum of electromagnetic energy. Getting people to distinguish between ‘energy’ and ‘power’ isn’t going to penetrate swiftly into most people’s minds.

It’s not as though Apple is going to have any exclusivity rights over this new type of battery. Other companies will have the same increased battery life as Apple has. That’s something Apple should try to corner with an acquisition or pay for a year’s exclusivity to give Apple some sort of advantage for at least a short time.
The respectable UT Professor must be running on a type of the technology. More than goodenough at 94…very nice.
Yawn. The increase in price due to the new technology would make some model purchases prohibitive at this stage.
See you back here in two or three years, after this new tech manages to overthrow the current tech. IOW: There’s a lot invested in current lithium ion battery technology, therefore expect STODGE getting in the way of replacing it.
