Virginia becomes first U.S. state to legalize delivery robots

“America is now one step closer to becoming a sci-fi utopia, thanks to a new law passed in Virginia,” Tom Regan reports for Engadget.

“On Friday the state’s governor signed a ruling which will allow delivery robots to use its sidewalks and crosswalks from July 1st,” Regan reports. “Advised by Starship Technologies (an Estoninan robotics company that specializes in ground delivery) the legislation states that the bots cannot travel faster than ten miles per hour, or weigh over 50 pounds.”

“Virginia requires them to remain under the watchful eye of the delivery company via remote monitoring,” Regan reports. “While the new law will undoubtedly make your commute a bit more interesting, the state confirmed that the potentially dog-upsetting legislation can be amended by local councils or even overturned completely if it becomes too problematic.”

  1. That take is correct. America is a nation of fat, ignorant Trump voters, and they are not a utopia of any kind. If you had any brains at all you would ditch Apple and buy from a socially responsible company like Canada’s BlackBerry or Finland’s Jolla. Even Britain’s Ubuntu system is starting to become popular.

    1. “My name is Oliver, and I’m nothing but a big baby. Hillary lost and Trump won — I *still* can’t believe it. Waaaaah, Waaaaah, Waaaaah!”

Hey Oliver, here’s some worthy advice: try leaving your safe space (undoubtedly your mommy’s basement) for a few minutes longer each day so that you can experience the real world. You might learn some valuable lessons, such as two individuals competing in a track & field event will result in only one winner. Both do NOT get a first-place ribbon just for showing up.

      1. I’m not even American so I could care less at all about Clinton OR Trump. In fact, I don’t care at all about your horribly overrated companies. I would rather use British made products over American and I can’t wait for the day Ubuntu overtakes either Crapple OR Microshaft. Everyone needs a break from America’s Corporate Empire.

        1. Awww, is poor wittle Ollie feeling kind of small? Waaaaah! Waaaah! Waaaah!

Regarding “America’s Corporate Empire” (as you write it, oddly capitalized): are you paranoid? Are the mind control police infesting both of your brain cells right now? And, out of curiosity, does everyone in England wear tinfoil hats — or is it only you?

  2. Sounds like Virginia may also be the first state to see delivery robots hacked & vandalized.

It wasn’t that long ago that the neighbor of Virginia resident and actor Robert Duvall had to use a shotgun to eliminate the incessant privacy invasion of paparazzi with a remote controlled drone. Well done, I say.
