Apple’s iPhone 9 may feature retractable, scrollable display

“With the rumor mill currently fixated on the possible launch of an iPhone 8, its features, design and possible specs,” Darren Wall reports for ValueWalk. “You could have easily missed reports about an Apple patent application which could show a futuristic iPhone 9 design. One that if accurate may lead to a revolution in mobile technology and completely transform the form factor.”

“Last Thursday an Apple Patent was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,” Wall reports. “Since its publication, some have started to suggest that this could be the iPhone 9 a handset 18-months away.”

“Looking at the first Patent diagram [below] it’s clear to see that this device has a retractable display,” Wall reports. “Apparently, two cylindrical looking housing units on the left-and-right will activate from which the screen will un-scroll.”

MacDailyNews Take: For iPhone 9, a mere 18 months away?

    1. Articles that take a patent application and try to extrapolate that out to actual products are either:
      1. showing that the author doesn’t know how patents work, or
      2. showing that the author thinks their readers are dupes.

      You decide which.

  1. Strangely familiar to a 90s Scfi series form factor, always thought that was really cool and wondered if it would ever see the light of day. With foldable screens so prevalent of late in the research labs the image of that device was in my mind again on and off this past year or so, but this is the first suggestion of the actual design (or something so similar) being fulfilled so precisely.

  2. What’s so great about an iPhone with a retractable display? It seems to me the current solid slab design is just fine. Who wants to have to deal with some floppy display? Just because they show these things in some sci-fi movie that doesn’t mean it’s entirely practical.

How do you type text messages on something like that. It might be fine for consuming content but likely terrible at creating it. Even if you want to watch a movie you’d have to hold the thing like a scroll or you would have to find some flat surface to lay it on. If you have to hold both ends with your hands, then how do you click on objects near the center. It just seems like a stupid idea because I can’t envision using some floppy device comfortably.
