Following President Trump’s address to Congress, Dow surges 300 points to blast past 21,000 for first time

“Wall Street is giving President Trump’s first speech to Congress a standing ovation,” Matt Egan reports for CNN. “The Dow soared 300 points and zoomed beyond the 21,000 level for the first time ever on Wednesday. The milestone comes barely a month after the Dow hit 20,000 for the first time.”

“Trump’s primetime address to Congress received high marks from viewers, and has clearly left Wall Street in good spirits, too,” Egan reports. “Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage firm ConvergEx [said], ‘It was a solid speech from the perspective of putting Trump on a truly presidential footing.’ For instance, Trump asked members of Congress to ‘join me in dreaming big, and bold and daring things for our country.'”

“All told, the Dow has now skyrocketed 2,700 points since Trump’s victory in November,” Egan reports. “If the Dow closes above 21,000 on Wednesday, it would be just 24 trading days since the 20,000 milestone.”

    1. As the world’s only superpower, our allies will be just fine, thanks – even if they finally have to pay up and meet their NATO obligations for a change.

      1. A superpower requires a working ethical compass and the ability to travel the moral high ground and your nation lost that a long time ago.

Now a superbully doesn’t need that and it’s a more accurate term to describe yourself. After all you are the illegal invaders that are the cause all those Iraqi refugees that won’t be getting a safe haven in your now decrepit nation.

By the way did you ever find that weapons of mass destruction program you went looking for way back when? You’ve sure had enough time and murdered and butchered enough people to do so.

        1. Europe became infantilized long ago owing to the fact that the US paid for its defense after WWII, which allowed it to put all its money into social welfare. Europe forgot where its defense comes from and instead parades its so-called moral superiority around that it can only pay for because of the USA.

        2. I was talking about the Iraqi war, the sequel. You are spot on about what you say about Europe after WWII, the marshall plan, probably why a lot of European countries went along for the Iraqi escapade.

        3. Not so fast…
The Marshall Plan: An Act to promote world peace and the generaul welfare, national interest, and foreign policy of the United States through economic, financial, and other measures necessary to the maintenance of conditions abroad in which free institutions may survive and consistent with the b>maintenance of the strength and stability of the United States.
Ah yes…that plan. The same plan that cemented the US’s political and industrial worldwide dominance for half a century. The same plan that kept Europe in thrall to American industrial might that arose from the Lend Lease program which the U.K. only finally settled in 2006 having had to pay back double the original loans while recovering from total economic destruction. The same plan that saddled Europe with even more debts when the US withdrew its manpower but not it’s equipment and infrastructure – which still had to be paid for. The same plan that was conditional on the free – as in ‘one way’, exchange of advanced technology IP and unconditional support of American foreign policy.
          That plan!
Ironic that Trump proposes extreme cuts in State Department funding that would not allow such programs in future in places like Iraq similarly destroyed by devastating conflict.
          Irony is truly dead.

        4. That’s projecting the Marshall plan quite a bit. One thing though that adds to the irony of your last sentence or two.

It was Nazi Germany and associates were the ones that declared war that ravaged Europe. This time it was your terroristic nation that declared the absolutely useless war on Iraq.

Iraq was never a threat to you, heck I doubt that there are more of a handful of precious citizens from your country killed compared to the thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens killed.

So bring out WWII all you want, but just remember that for this current Iraqi conflict, you are the ones that are like the nazis, and you know what happened to them.

        5. Hang on there, I’m with you…all the way. And you did mention the Marshall Plan with added support for the idea that “Europe became infantilized long ago owing to the fact that the US paid for its defense after WWII, ”
I don’t live in the US but do have dual UK/US citizenship have lived and worked there for many years, have many friends there, I actually like the US and feel entitled to add some irony.
I utterly reject your “nazi sympathizer” projection.
Likewise, I utterly despise the notion of declaring war ‘in’ another nation and the monstrous and perverse justification that goes with it. And that goes for ‘any’ country.
          OK?

        6. All right Gotcha, thanks for the post.

I wasn’t the one that initiated the mention of the Marshall plan, that was mjmj666 though he did not mention the plan by name I gather that was what he was referring to.

I like the nation as well, just wish they would figure out the obvious and get back on track.

My point was not to show any nazi sympathizing, just pointing out that it was the nazis that were the aggressor in WWII and that Apple’s home country was the aggressor in the Iraq work. That’s a fact, and you can accept it or reject if you wish.

If you are talking about Apple’s home country as being monstrous and perverting justice (through torture and circumvention of the Geneva convention) then I’m with you on that.

          Looking good so far.

Try to keep up with world events, m’kay?

        8. Regardless, that is incorrect information.

        9. Fact, whether you like it or not:

        10. What part of “program” do you not understand. You did not find any program there, you found stockpiles of old abandoned rusted out garbage weapons from a previous program that Apple’s home country was involved in. The denial runs strong here.

      1. “Cook also touted job creation in the U.S., and said that the company has created 2 million jobs in America —1.4 million of them related to app development.” Tim Cook yesterday , asshole.

        1. As of January 2015, Apple Inc. claims to directly employ 66,000 employees in the United States alone. Many other jobs are attributable to Apple, including 627,000 created to support the iOS ecosystem. The company’s 265 Apple stores employ about 30,000 retail employees.

          you can’t count, bïtch.

        1. Nice, link. Now, take that back to when they joined the DJIA (March 2015) instead of to just the end of this past January. However, I will admit that price per share is a bit higher than when they initially joined (finally).

        1. I’ve seen 10 times more in support of Trump for the DOW busting through 21,000.

So, it is no surprise Apple fanboy that you find one nugget that represents your point of view.

It only takes one person to declare a hung jury and nullify the other 90%+. Enjoy your delusion …

  1. Following Apple iPhone 8 rumors, DOW surges 300 points to break 21K Barrier! There fixed yer FAKE NEWS. AAPL is such a big component of the DOW it is bad journalism not to mention any AAPL move in conjunction with a DOW move.

      1. From the original article to which your Yahoo link referred:

Investors have also been excited about the possibility that Apple will bring back its hoard of more than $200 billion in cash held abroad, which could be used for shareholder-friendly activities like share repurchases and dividends. President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress seem eager to help companies bring such holdings home. The Wall Street Journal, March 1, 2017

        1. So what about it, we’ll get richer.

Agent orange better not dictate any conditions to Apple, this counrty needs Apple a whole lot more than it needs that fat peice of orange lard. A lot more than 2 million people will be effected and hurt off any tantrum agent orange knee jerks, that hurts Apple.

    1. The following quote from the above article is from CNN:

“Trump’s primetime address to Congress received high marks from viewers, and has clearly left Wall Street in good spirits.”

The above quote from the above article is not from MDN.

Those quotation marks mean something, ignoramus. So does “Matt Egan reports for CNN,” moron.

  2. Donald Trump delivered the most finely crafted speech of his political life Tuesday night in what will go down as one of the best speeches delivered to a joint session of Congress in the past two decades.

He hit stirring emotional high notes. And he laid out his vision for his presidency.

Mr. Trump stole the issue of affordable health care from Democrats. He unabashedly owned the fight against illegal immigration.

“Obamacare is collapsing — and we must act decisively to protect all Americans,” he said. “Action is not a choice — it is a necessity.”

In other words, Democrats led by President Obama swindled poor Americans into this disastrous program with their usual host of lies and false promises and now these good people are stranded. But Mr. Trump and Republicans are not going to leave these innocent Americans to dig themselves out of the mess Democrats put them in.

“So I am calling on all Democrats and Republicans in the Congress to work with us to save Americans from this imploding Obamacare disaster.”

When the camera panned to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — who, inexplicably, is still the Democratic leader in the House — she looked like she had been sucking on the bitterest of lemons.

Strategically, it was brilliant. It completely cuts Democrats out of the debate.

Mr. Trump then laid out the broad brush parameters of a health-care law he would like to see Republicans hammer out to replace Obamacare.

On illegal immigration, Mr. Trump held firm.

“To any in Congress who do not believe we should enforce our laws, I would ask you this question: What would you say to the American family that loses their jobs, their income, or a loved one, because America refused to uphold its laws and defend its borders.”

Mr. Trump also deplored the hellfire violence in Chicago and called education “the civil rights issue of our time.”

The senator from Illinois and other Democrats offered only the most paltry, perfunctory applause.

The entire speech was supremely presidential. But it wasn’t without humor. After excoriating both Democrats and Republicans for spending $6 trillion in the Middle East, he said, “we could have rebuilt our country — twice.”

He waited two beats. “And maybe even three times if we had people who had the ability to … negotiate.”

The camera panned to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who was exchanging perplexed glances with an equally befuddled senator. They didn’t get the line. Apparently, Ms. Warren never achieved her merit badge for reading smoke signals.

In the end, Donald Trump so dominated the entire night that Democrats were left nothing but sullen protests.

In a shocking development, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg did not doze off during the hour long address. At least not on national television. She did not show up.

There were so many protests on the Democratic side of the aisle, it was hard to keep track. Even the Democrats seemed confused about what they were protesting.

Rep. Joseph Crowley, New York Democrat, wore a giant pin protesting, well, not sure exactly what. It simply featured a large question mark.

In all honesty, that pin could be the party’s entire platform in the next election.

  3. Amazing the effect on the stock market and the morale of a country that can be seen if the leader actually speaks positively about private sector jobs, cutting government, enforcing laws and says nothing about people who are confused about what rest room to use. Very refreshing. And to clear one thing up, Apple’s entire rise today was obviously from the speech since Apple did nothing of note. Today was a free market bounce. And this is from a person who did not even vote for Trump. Of course I didn’t vote for Bill Clinton’s lover either.

  4. I think you guys are giving Trump too much credit, because his track record is not that good about paying it back.
So far he’s been very drumphy – one speech does not a brilliant man make. If anything this is just an aberration.
    Let’s give it some time.

    1. When did Republicans start wearing white pointy hats in Congress? I thought that they kept those cleaned and pressed for their nighttime activities…

That is a joke at botty’s expense. Actually, I find his post to be in bad taste. The KKK is not a laughing manner, and the Trump campaign has given it new life.

  5. botty, Fwhatever, and others…Trump certainly sounds a bit more Presidential last night. But let’s wait a while before crowning him. He needs to demonstrate that he can maintain a more statesmanlike demeanor for more than a day. And he needs to actually accomplish some stuff first.

Talk, especially Trump talk, is cheap. I have heard a lot…but he is finding that the *doing* is a lot more difficult than the *talking*. Trump finally appears to be realizing and acknowledging that these issues – like healthcare – are complex. And he has yet to show how he can pay for everything including $64B in increased defense spending, a massive infrastructure program, healthcare reform, etc., without raising taxes or the annual deficit.

  6. Hideous claim that if B follows A then A caused B. What an idiotic claim. TRUMP had as much to do with the Dow today as he did with the various firms that announced long planned factory decisions etc long before the buffoon entered office. Trump’s speech had ZERO, repeat, ZERO to do with today’s performance. Warren Buffet maybe had a deep impact, not Trump. Of course the losers will continue their infantile barfing arguments around this ad infinitum. Unbelievable.

    1. What’s unbelievable is how clueless and partisan you are.

Trump enthusiasm and one of the best political speeches of all time sent the Dow soaring. Trump absolutely had EVERYTHING TO DO WITH IT!
