“A new report from KGI predicts that all new iPhone models introduced in 2017 will feature wireless charging, on both the redesigned iPhone 8 and the iterative iPhone 7 devices expected to debut in the fall,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac.
“KGI has mentioned the addition of wireless charging previously. Today’s report reaffirms it will be available on all three new models after some reports to the contrary, not merely limited to the premium OLED device,” Mayo reports. “However, the analyst warns there may be higher costs in production, especially with the 3D Touch sensor.”
Mayo reports, “KGI says the total cost of the 3D Touch module will rise between 30-50%, an increase that Apple may have to pass onto the consumer in the final sale price.”

Energies still needs a wire. What it doesn’t need is a charging pad.

Everything eventuallly needs a wire, duh, but Energous’ solution actually is wireless for the end user once the bases are installed.
Qi charging is also wireless to the user once the mat is installed, er…plugged-in. It’s the need of a mat that’s restricting.
What’s the advantage? What’s the difference to plugging a cable in or laying on a mat??? Half a second? I don’t see the advantage….The Energous method seems convenient and a step up from the wire/mat but only if it’s safe to send current wirelessly across the room.
Totaly agree.. plus a pad has the added inconveniance of taking up more room, phone not properly bring placed on it or sliding off. ….And its more inconvenient to carry around than a simple plugin eire

This is ‘Gee Whiz!’ tech. But it’s certainly a step forward in user-friendliness and ease-of-use, if it works. That ‘if it works’ part is a problem as well as the EM noise created by such a system. It theoretically can be done perfectly well. But I keep reading about side effect problems and lack of efficiency.
