“Apple is moving its international iTunes business assets from Luxembourg to Ireland at the start of next month,” Tom Mendelsohn reports for Ars Technica.
“From February 5, the non-US side of its business, including the iTunes Store, Apple Music, the App Store, and the iBooks Store, will operate from its European HQ in Cork, according to a note sent out to developers yesterday,” Mendelsohn reports. “In effect, Apple is moving its subsidiaries from one low-tax European haven to another, in what could be construed as a careful slight to top EU politicians.”
“Apple employs around 5,500 people in Cork and last year announced it would expand that number by around a thousand,” Mendelsohn reports. “The company is also in the process of building an €850 million (£725 million) data centre in Athenry, which would underpin both iTunes and iCloud.”

I have a friend in Scotland that I play WordsWithFriends…she told me that relatives of Donald Trump in her country were getting hell from the media there just for being cousins. She was furious, as she knew them personally.
I suppose that Trump never played Words With Friends, but Alex Baldwin, who famously did so, also famously portrayed Trump on SNL. And Trump, who famously employs Twitter to foreshadow draconian policy-making, could conceivably branch out to social gaming, crushing Scrabble and WWF competitors with 600+ points. It wouldn’t take away from his governmental responsibilities at all. After all, his tweets have already been exposed as arising from multiple sources. And there is little shame in authoring a ghost-written autobiography, though he still insists The Art of the Deal is all his.
Just like stand-up comics and past US Presidents, Trump has access to talented writers, and he can use them to great advantage. Hire the best wordsmiths and lexicographical savants to fuel his WWF games, and watch the intellectual plaudits flow in. William Safire would be proud.

I admire your idealism and your refined strain of cynicism. It is a tincture that is rare, over here on the Colonial side of the Atlantic.
I can afford to be gleeful about these developments, as my cousins on my mother’s side may be able to sustain employment in County Cork from now on (owing to Apple’s economic investment); the pull-out that was feared, never happened, and Tim Cook was as good as his word: Apple is committed to Ireland and its people. Thankfully, I retain my citizenship and one day, God willing, and being retired from American adventures, I will lay aside my shillelagh and go home.
Cynicism? Oh my dear, I’m a great optimist and I believe what goes round comes round. That keeps me light hearted and fancy free. Mind you, I would not want to be in the way of what’s coming round to your adopted nation so I’m personally overjoyed that you have plans for a ticket on the way out. I hope you need it cause that will mean the just desserts are finally arriving.
Just make sure you get out in time cause if your nation stops people from coming into the country it won’t be long before they start preventing people from leaving the country. It’s so predictable.
Apple is committed to the world, planet earth first. That’s the journey worth taking and savoring.
If I should happen to return to Ireland it will be because I resolved, in my retirement years, to enjoy the boisterous menfolk and laughing children of my clan, and to join a Travellers’ quilting society, and to form a mathematical study group devoted to Mr. Hamilton’s quaternions and their application in videogames. It will not be because I have been driven away in fear of political truncheons. The Irish have fight, do not doubt it. Speaking of which, and by the way, I recommend viewing The Snatch, with Mr. Brad Pitt impersonating a Traveller, and doing alright at it, aside from having the mumbles.
Snatch is one of my favorite movies, a great comedy that goes well along with Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
