Qualcomm has issued the following press release regarding Apple’s $1 billion lawsuit alleging onerous licensing practices on Qualcomm’s part:
While we are still in the process of reviewing the complaint in detail, it is quite clear that Apple’s claims are baseless. Apple has intentionally mischaracterized our agreements and negotiations, as well as the enormity and value of the technology we have invented, contributed and shared with all mobile device makers through our licensing program. Apple has been actively encouraging regulatory attacks on Qualcomm’s business in various jurisdictions around the world, as reflected in the recent KFTC decision and FTC complaint, by misrepresenting facts and withholding information. We welcome the opportunity to have these meritless claims heard in court where we will be entitled to full discovery of Apple’s practices and a robust examination of the merits,” said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel, Qualcomm Incorporated.

Yeah, meritless claims. The corporate hate will be aimed directly at Apple as Apple will be seen as the big bully trying to hurt innocent, little Qualcomm whose only trying to get along with everyone. Apple, as usual, will not have any chance of collecting the $1B or any smaller amount. The courts will likely side with Qualcomm. It’s interesting how Apple will be said to be fabricating these charges because Apple needs that $1B so badly. I’m sure Apple’s lawyers have nothing better to do except spend years trying to get that paltry sum.
Yeah, Apple’s crack team of lawyers from Dewey, Cheatham & Howell. They’ve done such an awesome job so far, especially at filling their pockets from Apple’s coffers.
To the best of my knowledge, Apple does not initiate many lawsuits of this type/magnitude. And I do not recall Apple issuing such scathing statements against another supplier, even Samsung. That leads me to believe that there is substantial merit in Apple’s allegations and the FTC’s investigation. The alternative would be that Apple released highly inflammatory and potentially libelous statements that could not be substantiated. I find that highly unlikely. No, I think that Apple simply waited until Qualcomm’s greed resulted in an increasing series of illegal activities that could no longer be covered up or effectively denied.
When is the last time any corporation admitted guilt?
Perhaps, just perhaps, Qualcomm (and Nokia and others), have decided that one way to enhance their bottom line is by soaking the company with the deepest pockets and that Apple decided that if they didn’t put a stop to it at $1B, it could soon be $100B.
