How the new Trump administration could help or hurt Apple’s business

Apple “needs to return to year-over-year financial growth after a disappointing 2016. Last year, revenue fell for the first time since 2001, and Apple missed some of its own internal sales goals,” Andrew Cunningham writes for Ars Technica. “Ordinarily, Apple’s success hinges mostly on the products it announced and those products’ quality. But 2017 has a new and unforeseen variable: President-elect Donald J. Trump.”

“Apple was a frequent target of Trump’s criticism on the campaign trail,” Cunningham writes. “As one of America’s biggest companies, Apple will continue to find itself singled out by Trump. Apple provides a good case study for the ways in which Trump’s stated economic and trade policies could benefit and damage large, multinational tech companies. Those policies combine typical Republican orthodoxy about low corporate tax rates with Trump’s bellicose proclamations about import tariffs. Depending on the way things break, Trump’s policies are going to be a double-edged sword for Apple and any company that relies heavily on overseas manufacturing and the global economy.”

“In a conversation with New York Times editors and reporters in the days following the election, Trump claimed to have spoken to Apple CEO Tim Cook about building “a big plant in the United States” and about cutting taxes and regulations that would currently keep Apple from doing so (though he didn’t name any regulations in particular),” Cunningham writes. “Whether Apple will move any significant portion of its manufacturing operations to the United States depends on the specific tax and regulatory benefits a Trump administration can deliver.”

“There are a few areas where Apple’s bottom line stands to benefit from Trump and the Republicans’ stated policies, particularly when it comes to domestic tax rates and repatriation taxes,” Cunningham writes. “But Apple could also lose a lot during Trump’s presidency, particularly if Trump follows through on many of his economic or foreign policy promises.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote back in September:

Let’s not do another “one-time-only” (smirk) repatriation holiday. Let’s fix the broken U.S. corporate tax code instead. Let us eschew the easy way out, that fixes nothing in the long run, and choose to do the hard work instead.

MacDailyNews Note: Today is Martin Luther King Day in the U.S. and the markets are closed. As usual on such trading holidays, we will have limited posting today.

    1. Though I advocate Trump’s intent to orchestrate better agreements (deals), I’m more than a bit apprehensive with a President that mandates that a law abiding company do this/that. If mandating a company to return manufacturing back to the US requires “special” $$ treatment to make it business-wise, I don’t think it’s a real benefit…other than in appearance. I think it portends a complicated balance btwn promoting the nation’s interests and healthy capitalism.

        1. No, botvinnick, we ALL lose. The president is a pussy-grabbing piss drinker who is now and will always be an international embarrassment. He is a semi-literate racist misogynist who is reviled around the world. He is best on Howard Stern or a reality show and is not presidential material. Also, anyone who isn’t outraged by Russia affecting the election is nothing but a traitor.

        2. Botvinnik, you are a traitor to your country. Shame on you. You are obviously an uneducated lout. You probabably have multiple handguns, drive a truck and are a devout Christian.

        3. Not sure why someone using the name “Father Ted” would call someone like botvinnik a “devout Christian.”
I mean, seriously, go read the Gospel. His behavior makes it clear that his political philosophy is much more important to him than following the teachings of Jesus Christ.

U.S. nationalism is a heresy, incompatible with being a devout Christian.
          “You cannot serve two masters.”

        4. Krioni,

Your judgement of US nationalism and compatibility with Christianity is completely dependent upon your definitions. How do you presume that one bows to nationalism and not to it’s opposite (globalism, or)?

        5. lol, SUCK IT, Libtard, you bitches love to hand out lies, innuendo and fake news, but YOU can’t take it. Get your binky and blanket, you got eight beautiful years ahead of you.

You’ve lost The White House, The Senate, The House, The Supreme Court, The Governorships, The State Houses…

you’ve lost America, so SUCK IT.

        6. You tell ’em. Hell, if only we can have more fine and bee-you-ti-ful people such as yourself in the damn government, everything would be great then.

        7. You pathetic tRumpanzees. America is already great and I am sorry your lives are so pathetic that you embrace the victim card. Yes a victim of really what makes America great. You are just such a whiny bunch that you even latched onto the backside of an admitted sexual assaulter, liar, failed businessman with ties to russia, clown who does not have a clue about governance. Here. Let me brighten your day. This FLAMING LIBERAL is having a good time watching all you pathetic losers whine and snivel. Oh and by the way. My kids are doing better than me. Isn’t that some kind of gold standard.

        8. what the hell are you talking about? I know.. you are an as confused liar as tRump and your mind is very fogged by being attached to his tRump. The latest is your liar in chief’s lies about having met putin, his master.

still can’t address why your life is so pitiful and pathetic that you are suddenly the victim of those mean liberals.. life is so mean to you… boo hoo sniveler.

        9. Shut up tRumpanzee. I willingly and conciously gave up any tolerance as I watched the racist f*cks for the last 8 years attack a Great President. I reconfirmed that when I saw that racism given leave to come to the forefront.

  1. Trump will provide a much better business environment for Apple. So if any hurt comes to Apple, it’ll be Timmy Boy you need to point your
Liberal finger at. He wore out Steves coat tails a couple years back.

  2. Problem with all this is in 4 or 8 years, and if the Dems. get back in, you can be sure they will try to reverse anything Trump has done, so politics, like a yo-yo, is never set in stone.
Then Apple will have to move again, back overseas…

  3. I personally think Trump is gonna kick some economic butt, and the USA economy in general will be soaring in a couple years…if he survives the attack to the Neo-Liberals, who are just as bad as the Neo-Cons, in a completely different way. If that happens, Apple will be riding high. Will be nice to not have a Google pandering jack-ass who was bitter bc Steve Jobs didn’t approve of his policies as president.

      1. Is that who said it? Heck I knew I should have put that in quotes. Thanks botvinnik, you are so much more up on Marks than I am. What where his brothers names? I think one was Groucho.

    1. RW: To intentionally “hurt,” or act in a way out side of your preference? If the former, what are some of his malevolent actions/intents? There’s quite a big difference btwn the two.

      1. I have no clue, my comment was on MDN’s headline. If the chump decides to get companies to tow a certain lines, that’s none of my business, but overall I do hope that he is good for business provided that the ecological environment is respected.

        Yes, I’m optimistic about that.

My concern and real interest is with humane values. When I look at what that nation has done on the world stage I’m obviously repulsed but this is a major changing of the guard, so I’m just sitting back and watching.

Right now this is prelude, and I’m just sitting and eating popcorn. I’m patient, I think after the first 100 days will be a good time to evaluate what he does.

One way or another I think it’s going to be amazing entertainment.

  4. The problem is that Trump seems to always want to “win” and score points.
Life isn’t generally like that. Except for a powerful few, winning is usually achieved as part of a team and by allowing and encouraging those with whom you deal to also score points and win. Most things are not zero sum games.
It’s odd that Trump proclaims his capitalist credentials while trying to pick and choose individual command and control type changes targeted at particular countries and companies. If he is authentic he’ll let the market choose how to achieve the best outcomes for their circumstances.
If Apple, BMW, etc genuinely thought they could sell more, be more profitable and be more efficient in their use of capital by increasing production in the USA, they would have.
To insist that certain industries, job categories, etc remain in or relocate to the USA is to continually look back and idolize the past, rather than recognizing that things always change. I don’t recall Trump insisting that electronic distribution of music and movies be halted or or taxed extra because of the effect on good old American video and CD stores.
Lastly, he needs to grow up. I can’t believe the President elect is wasting his time and taxpayers’ money following what comedy shows are saying about him.

    1. 9/10: agreed w/ last sentence. I embrace a true draining of the swamp, or tearing down the vaulted’ this is the ways things are done” mentality. I heard one reason Don wants to use Twitter is to sidestep media. On it’s face, it sounds good to me. The media doesn’t need to re-feed me his statements. But when tit f/ tat (“win/score points”) is the catalyst, he makes himself out to be a petulant infant needing his diapers changed. Take away the juvenile outbursts would still find me holding my breath, but the cringing would drop immensely.

  5. I guarantee you that within the first 100 days of a Trump presidency, Apple will update the Mac Pro and the MacBook will get the MagSafe back. Apple will also add 4K to Apple Television. Mark my words. Obama has let Apple stagnate for far too long.
