Mac Pro 2 concept takes ‘trashcan’ Mac Pro and expands it, literally

“A German designer [Pascal Eggert] has come up with some interesting renders for a concept Mac Pro 2 that takes the ‘trashcan’ design and extends it into a larger oval shape design, making it look somewhat like an old Mac Pro merged with a new Mac Pro,” Abdel Ibrahim writes for App Advice.

“If you’re someone who’s been arguing that Apple needs to offer both older and newer ports, than this is essentially your dream machine,” Ibrahim writes. “It has a total of 20 ports including 8 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 4 Thunderbolt 2 ports, 4 USB 3 ports, 2 Gigabit ethernet ports, and 2 HDMI 2.1 ports.”

Ibrahim writes, “The machine would also be upgradable, with two GPU cards that can be easily swapped for newer ones.”

  1. See? What’s so hard or confusing about that? C’mon Apple. There’s far more demand for a full-featured headless desktop than you think. And if you figure out a way to also make it easily rack-mountable, you’ll regain quite a few lost pro and prosumer users.

  2. Won’t happen. As Jobs said, “It doesn’t take innovation to add features and make a bigger product”. It will likely follow the same path as the cube, as it shrunk even more to become the Mac Mini. Instead of more, you can look forward to a new MacDonutPro (with only 4 USB-C ports) reminiscent of their new headquarters. As a bonus, maybe it will come with double-sided tape so you can stick it on the back of your 4K LG display.

  3. Pascal concept is impressive!

    My changes would be:

    – Only 2 SSD sockets for boot + storage drive
    – 4 sockets for PCI-E M2 blades
    – One fullsize GPU, additional on external TB3 box
    – four DIMM sockets (for 64/128 GB)
    – 16/32GB DIMMs compatible
    – two CPU sockets in standard, sold with one at base configuration

    Have some questions though:

    – How GPUs sockets are connected to backpanel?
    – How you power two fullsize GPUs and two CPUs?
    – Where is place for 600W PSU ?
    – Where is room for 1/2 CPUs?

I think Apple have at least 20 various prototypes of such machines, but there is no will to bother with that. And that bothers and scares me so much.

Apple is like middle age man in his fourties. For the first time it feels getting older and starts to be obesse, passive and lazy.

  4. I like the concept, but some of it isn’t possible. The 8 Thunderbolt ports would require a full 4 Thunderbolt controllers. That’s an awful lot, and we really don’t need 8 Thunderbolt ports. What we do need is at least 4 full speed Thunderbolt ports. Generally what we see with Thunderbolt, is one port on the controller that’s full speed, and the other being half speed, or less. That’s true for the current Mac Pro. We do t need Thunderbolt 2 ports, because 3 is backwards comparable.

Then there’s HDMI 2.1. Well, that’s just been certified, and the controller won’t be out until late this year. right now, Intel doesn’t support HDMI directly, so third party chips are required, or the more expensive Intel controllers.

And why just 4 USB 3 ports? There should be 6. 4 goes very quickly. And those should be USB C ports using 3.1, for 10Gbps, though again, Intel doesn’t support 10Gbps for most of its chips yet, and we need separate controllers. We don’t need old USB ports. Like it or not, a better solution are cable servers with USB C on one end, and a standard USB A on the other. There are plenty of those calves out there. Just make sure they’re rated for 10Gbps, as many USB C cables aren’t.

So I want a new Mac Pro, and hopefully, Apple is actually actively working on one. But some of the specs for this aren’t feasible, or even sensible.

  5. Unreal and never going to happen, some bs mainstream parts inside with samsung logos. Apple is never going waste space for SSD drives like those nasty 850 evos. Instead they will put one pcie chip, 1TB or 2TB and expects that if someone needs more, he/she connects additional storage via thunderbolt.

  6. This German Engineer must be one that is living in the past… support old ports? Yeah I want my car to support old energy sources like coal; and support old engine starters like recoil-handle-starters… whatever!

  7. Apple should make a brand new Mac Pro with a brand new Apple Thunderbolt Display. Do not forget a brand new Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad with built-in two-port hub of USB 3.1 Type-C (reversible) Generation 2 (10 Gbps) or even better Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps).
