The rumor that Apple will launch AR glasses in 2017 is ridiculous

“It’s one of the more ridiculous rumors we’ve heard in a while: Apple is teaming up with Zeiss to create augmented-reality glasses that will be unveiled later this year, according to long-time tech blogger Robert Scoble,” Buster Hein writes for Cult of Mac. “Don’t believe him.”

“‘A Zeiss employee confirmed the rumors that Apple and Carl Zeiss AG are working on a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses that may be announced this year,’ Scoble wrote in a Facebook post. ‘I thought it was next year but now that I saw this I believe it will happen this year,'” Hein writes. “You probably shouldn’t believe a word Scoble says about Apple and AR.”

“First, the post says the employee confirmed rumors that Apple and Zeiss are working together, but that wasn’t a rumor until Scoble created it. CES booths aren’t always the best sources of information, either. Many times, only a few of the people at the booth actually work for the company,” Hein writes. “Scoble hasn’t been a reputable source for years and his pulse on tech has been a bit off lately… In October, he wrote that the next iPhone was going to be completely clear.”

      1. I agree, between a MacBook at home, iPhone in my pocket, watch on my wrist and AirPods in my ears, I’m about tapped out on Apple tech. What I want is rock-solid reliability in software and hardware that already exists.

      2. Well AR and AI combind can be very useful… list is too long… but i suggest you do some research on that… its quite interesting. From location identification… to space planning …. to shopping cloths on line….. to research and development, visualization… etc
        Same with VR …..
but Its not all about solutions to problems…. sometime its about entertainment…

What problems do movies solve? Yet there is huge industry revolving around it……. TV and screens and cameras and all kind of gadgets were invented to deliver images.
What problem does music solve? Yet again there is a huge industry revolving around it……….. ipod was invented to deliver music.

Similarly..VR and AR can deliver increadible experiences…. experiences we can enjoy… use and learn through.

  1. very interesting speculative news, but i am not exactly sure how i feel about this

doubtless ar/vr will be a big wave to ride into the future….

and you have two top notch companies…apple/zeiss sounds like an amazing pairing

on the other hand both of whom sell their (traditionally) premium quality wares for premium prices…especially mr.zeiss.

makes you wonder if normal people will be able to afford them or whether we may be entering another solid gold apple watch scenario.

    1. I bought a sony ps4 VR system this holiday …..
Its an amazing experience… both kids and adults get a major kick out of it… to a point where im asked to bring my whole system to every party/gathering i go….
My frinds and their kids call it an amusement park at home…
Gi belive the frontier is ready for the mainstream…… granted not all games/experiances are great and polished… but the few that are, are amazing. And its just the begining.

    2. P.s. I would not expect anything less than Ziess level quality from Apple products… they are at same level…imo…
Dont see this being priced out if reach like the failed Gold watch luxury experiment Apple dipped their toes in.

      1. Are there standards for this yet? Or is every system completely different? My guess is that there would be a standards organization, and everyone who is building systems would be a member, and Apple would be doing something completely different, and most content would be on the standard system…

You know, how things normally work.

        1. I dont think there is.. but not sure…….. but there is an open source VR development community….

I hear you on Apples isolated universe though ..
But hey if we are in Apple universe… we should not be deprived of the experience and the uses it offers…

If Apple had taken a leading roll in this area… i and many others would have spent our money on Apple rather than Sony… thats is a fact..

Sony PSVR is all sold out …and it came out in October 2016 …. a 399$ headset is now selling for 800 on ebay…..
so there is interest… and its just the begining of the mainstream exposure and the technology is only going to get better.

That is why i hope Apple ptioritize it…
          Its fun and exciting

        2. Tim Cook expressed interest on Augmented Reality and not on VR. And both together may require even more powerful systems, so I guess if Apple is working on something it may not be ready this year.

There are no standards yet at least on VR, the tools for development are still in an early stage, an they are very experimental and the hardware needs to grow much more to produce the immersion expected. Of course even in this stage it is a very interesting experience. But If you have a VR device right now you are basically an early adopter and you are helping for future development.

The Mac today is not “a qualified platform” for VR because there are no powerful enough GPUs to handle the minimum. This is a desktop AMD 460 GPU or an Nvidia GTX 1060 to get 45 FPS on each screen. But the recommended hardware is very demanding.

This is what makes this rumor very unlikely this year. It will be a very limited implementation on machines that haven’t reached the marked yet.

“Of course even in this stage it is a very interesting experience. But If you have a VR device right now you are basically an early adopter and you are helping for future development”

How is that different from The original iphone’s experience?

It was way infirior then than its now….but it was sufficient to excite people and in no time it revolutionized the whole industry.

To me… VR is sufficiently exciting now..but ofcourse it will get much much better ..

  2. “Scoble hasn’t been a reputable source for years and his pulse on tech has been a bit off lately..”
Lately? When has he had a pulse since he was fired from Microsoft a DECADE ago? As an evangelist no less….

  3. Scoble may not have been firing on all cylinders recently, but that does not mean that he will always be wrong.

An Apple and Zeiss collaboration is a rumour. There is no shortage of rumours about Apple, so just like all the other rumours, we have to wait and see what actually happens.

At least Scoble puts a timescale on his prediction, so by the end of December we’ll know if he was right or wrong.

    1. “By the end of December we’ll know if he was right or wrong.”

“One man’s memory may be long, another’s may be short; taken together as one, memory vanishes altogether, and the mountebank thus escapes coming to account, and is assured of profiting anew from his nostrums.” — Samuel Johnson
