Removing unwanted email addresses in Apple’s Mail for Mac

Gary Rosenzweig writes for MacMost:

When you type and email address in Mail, you will get some suggestions that include your Contacts and also a list of previous recipients. Some of these addresses may be old or ones you don’t wish to see anymore.

You can delete them using the Previous Recipients list in Mail.

MacDailyNews Take: Cleaning “Previous Recipients” can be very satisfying, especially if you’ve never don it before!

  1. Hello,

Would someone answer a question about a similar problem I am having? Thank you in advance.

I have several old email addresses which I no longer use – mostly from old positions I held in various community groups – including from a Mac User’s Group which is no longer a functioning club.

When I compose an email, I have a list of 10 or so email addressed from which to chose to select as the sender. I would like to get rid of several of my “From” email addresses in Mail. I understand how to get rid of unwanted “To” recipient’s email addresses.

Note the email accounts do NOT exist under Mail–>Accounts. The Mail application remembers these old account addresses however.

I just installed a SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini and “upgraded?” from Mavericks to Sierra.

Thank you for your time and help!

Hoping Apple has not given up on the Mac Mini – but not holding my breath.

    1. I got to looking for your fix and it looks like you should go to “Mail” in the menu bar, “Preferences”, “Accounts”, “iCloud (IMAP)”, click on the “Email addresses” dropdown and pick “Edit email addresses”. It directs you to login to your iCloud account; I didn’t do that, but I assume you can go from there.

I have eleven addresses in there myself, lol. Hope this helps.

  2. Article is not true. First, if anyone has done a clean install, they will find that addresses removed from Previous Recipients will appear no matter how long ago or how many times a clean install is done. I have addresses from “years” ago which reappear after every clean install. Why does Apple still have them. Second, since upgrading to Sierra, e-mail addresses removed from Previous Recipients pop up when I begin to type someone else’s address. Even after I select the e-mail address and try to remove it, it doesn’t go anywhere. This has been a problem with Mail for years. My question is simple: Why does Apple have a list of previous e-mail addresses from years ago? Let’s here how Apple is concerned about privacy? Where do these previous e-mail addresses go? To NSA or some other government agency?
Just one of the reasons this 1980s Mac faithful user has purchased a PC at half the cost of the new MacBook Pro, but with better technology, more memory, and fewer problems with Apple’s suddenly dumbing down applications.

  3. Even if it lasts for a year or so it sure as hell beats the irritation of multiple useless alternative addresses and the possibility of accidentally sending an email to the wrong person.
