“When I decided the time had come to spend a lot of money on a shiny new MacBook Pro, I was tempted to get all the expense out of the way at once and upgrade displays at the same time,” Ben Lovejoy writes for 9to5Mac. “The problem is finding someone to take my money.”
“The display Apple would like me to buy as a replacement is the LG 5K UltraFine, but I have to say that it’s not really grabbing me,” Lovejoy writes. “First, and this may be shallow, but it isn’t going to win any design awards.”
“Second, and related to this, the build quality appears notably inferior to the [Apple Thunderbolt Display] monitor I already own,” Lovejoy writes. “[Also], I’d far rather have a 4K display with downstream Thunderbolt 3 ports than a 5K display without them. It seems LG and Apple may have been prioritising that impressive-sounding 5K number over the actual usability of the display.”

MacDailyNews Take: Perhaps CES 2017 will usher in better choices. We still wish we had a line of Apple-branded displays from which to choose. Since we have to stare at them all day, we’d gladly pay more for monitors designed by Jony Ive.
Aye, the lack of built-in speakers shows Apple was either not invited to the design party or didn’t bother to use it before making it their official recommend.
And the lack of camera in the 4K model is even more egregious in an increasingly Skype/Google/Facetime/Vlogging (remember that chestnut?) environment.
When do we stop giving our money to Apple in the hope of them doing something productive with it?

That said… even a bigger problem is Apples stupid choice to limit the visibilty of their logos at the high end/ power user envirnoments….and inviting competition to shine their logos where Apple computers are used. Massive marketing goofup imo.
Apple’s whole treatment(neglect/insult) of the power/pro user is one massive mistake …. ….
Apple you may be able to shove your bogus ‘Pro’ reality distortion down the average person throat… but you cant do that with power/pro users……. and they are the loudest voice who bring credibilty to your platform.

That is where I disagree with MDN. While I would expect a monitor designed by Jony Ive to look wonderful, it would also have features removed in favor of a slim design. No USB-C ports, or even speaker ports, just to make a really slim design.
So no thank you Jony, please do not design a display. I do not care how it looks, as long as it works perfectly with a great display, and has loads of ports, plus well build!
I must be missing something because the article and some of the comments don’t have it right. For the record, the 5K display does have downstream TB 3 ports as well as a camera, speakers, and mic. No, it’s no where as beautiful as Apple’s Thunderbolt Display, but it does appear to have the required specs. At least for me.
