Unboxing LG’s 27-inch UltraFine 5K Display with Thunderbolt 3

With the first preorders now arriving in the hands of customers, AppleInsider offers a closer look at LG’s gorgeous 27-inch UltraFine 5K Display, featuring Thunderbolt 3 connectivity to take advantage of Apple’s latest MacBook Pro models.

That 27-inch IPS LG UltraFine 5K Display with 5120-by-2880 resolution, P3 wide color gamut, three downstream USB-C ports, and over 14.7 million pixels was rather tempting at it’s original price of $1,299.95.

Now, at just $974, it’s pretty much irresistible!

    1. Probably not. I don’t know if thunderbolt 2 has enough banwidth or the controller chip necessary on the older MacBook Pro’s for it to work. They could only drive a 4K monitor I believe, we’ve never hooked up any of our previous gens to anything other than 1440p displays so I really don’t know, but I don’t think it’ll work.

  1. Its a shame apple axed the display buisness…
Its a shame that we have to shine LG logos rather than Apple where Apple devices are being used.
Specially at the high end level/ power user level.

For a company the size of Apple making their own casing for a display is a breeze….
even if its not a profitable buisness.. do it for marketing ressons… breakeven at worst.. but let the Apple Logos Shine everywhere !

  2. Amazing how many here judge a product from just looking at at picture or video.

Or from their previous (doubtful) experience.

I got to think that your better halves sure wished they had taken your pictures and posted them here before the made their commitment.

  3. Here’s the thing… does it work?

If so, what’s the problem? They don’t have “Apple style” or a an Apple logo? Really?

A lot of the griping appearing here lately is starting to make me think there might be some validity to the often vile commentary left by residents of the “dark side” that Mac users are nothing more than duped, image-conscious fanbois. Are you admitting that Apple sells junk like they’ve claimed? Be it their own or someone else’s?

Because Apple sells these monitors on their site. Would Apple do that if they didn’t meet Apple quality standards?

    1. What Apple quality standards? Where are those published?

Perhaps there is merit to the opinion hat if Apple is going to charge a premium for aluminium Macs that are marketed by Apple to be so thin and attractive, the least Apple could do is provide a matching monitor. But no, Apple never updated its monitors to match the latest iMacs. Apple couldn’t be bothered reintroducing the long lost 30 inch monitor. And with Apple’s bizarre decision to offer only one connector at a time, without nicely providing the user a smooth transition like every other electronics company seems to pull off gracefully, Apple screws over its legacy users. No current iPod iPhone or iPad can plug directly into this ugly plastic LG monitor, nor the newest MacBooks. The newest MacBooks also can’t natively plug into prior Apple monitors.

If Apple thinks it is offering users a more attractive desktop, or a better value, or a more versatile tool, or the best performance, someone needs to correct Apple immediately. They have failed on all counts.

Apple: get a clue. The future is not 100% mobile wireless consumer gadgets. If you can’t cut it on the personal computer market anymore, your future will not be pretty. Put your pile of cash to work impressing Mac owners with something that demonstrates Apple still can listen to users and deliver the best value in PCs.

      1. Better yet, put your pile of cash together building something Steve Jobs would be proud of….That isn’t the case any longer. ATV would never have been released. It’s an embarrassing piece of JUNK. The AW is meh….. (and, I’m on my second one.. Nothing much great here though). The “new” MBP 13″ is a disappointment and the battery life is AWFUL… Got mine one week ago and I’m getting about 5 hours on a charge.. Guess I’ll be returning this garbage too. . This is all such a DAMN shame.

    2. Too true.

At times on this site, when I’ve replied with something the fanbois don’t like, I’ve been told to “go back to Windows/Samsung/Whatever” or that I’m not really a Mac person.

Bought the first of my Macs in 1989 – a Plus, followed by an LC, a PowerBook 160, PowerMac 7100, an iBook, then another iBook when the first was stolen. Three iMacs, and a MacBook Air for my daughter. Four iPads so far, about a half a dozen iPhones.

Along the way I became an Apple Certified Technician and sold Macs for a while.

But when I point out something going on now that I don’t like, suddenly I’m “disloyal”…

  4. Apple, the world’s most valuable brand and by some measures the most valuable company, can’t make products within its core competencies.

Apple can’t make routers. Apple can’t make displays. Apple can’t make its own professional desktop. Apple can barely ship wireless headphones.

Apple has piggybacked onto the wireless carriers and turned into a utility company. Their insanely profitable iPhone only needs minimal updates and everything else is irrelevant.
