Early data suggest Apple once again notched very good Christmas sales

“Christmas may have come and gone, but there’s one more thing to unwrap: holiday data,” Deirdre Bosa reports for CNBC. “And once again, it looks like it was a very good holiday for Apple.”

“App-analytics company Mixpanel tracks new smartphone and tablet activations during the three days after Christmas, giving us an early indication of consumer behavior during a time that many spend with family, friends — and handheld devices,” Bosa reports. “Mixpanel’s metrics suggest that iPhones were still the hottest gift in smartphones. Last year, it was all about the 6s, and this year, it was all about Apple’s latest model, the iPhone 7. From Dec. 25 to 27, the number of unique active iPhone 7s increased by nearly 13 percent, according to Mixpanel.”

“By contrast, Android devices — including smartphones and tablets — saw a rise of less than 3 percent in the same period of time,” Bosa reports. “The Apple Watch was was still popular, though far less so than last year. In 2015, activations rose nearly 20 percent in the three days after Christmas. This year, they were up just 9 percent.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple Watch is now focused more tightly on fitness which is a smaller target market than the wider market of “all iPhone owners” to whom the first Apple Watch was pitched.

    1. I just got my AirPods yesterday. SIRI control is actually pretty good. Volume and track control via the Apple Watch are also good but only if you put music complication on the watch face. Otherwise, it’s too many steps…

  1. According to Mixpanel at 1 AM EST (6 AM UTC) last night, the iPhone 7/7 Plus had 23.59% usage of all iPhone models being used.

The iPhone 6s/6s Plus models were released on September 25, 2016, and the 7/7 Plus models were released on September 16, 2016. So, the 7/7 Plus had a nine day lead in the cycle, but It took the iPhone 6s/6s Plus to reach 23.84% usage on April 24, 2016. This is several months later than it is going to take the iPhone 7/7 Plus to reach this milestone.

Another interesting note about the iPhone usage percentages: On Christmas Eve the usage percentage decreased for the 7 and 6s phones, but substantially increase for the PRE iPhone 7 series, 6s series and 6 series. I thought it was impossible that there wad t any 7/7 Plus or 6s/6s Plus gifts exchanged on Christmas Eve, so I increased the base (total number of iPhones being used) by 5 million. It’s interesting so many older phones came online during Christmas Eve/Christmas Day (in places like China).

  2. MDN, that is the most ridiculous and pathetic excuse i’ve ever seen you write. If true, AW is failing on its own merits period. Both Nike and the regular version do the same damn thing

  3. Mdn…
AppleWatch is not only useful to health conscious active people..! Its notification and messaging are just as useful and wonderful…and that is for everybody who has an iphone !

Plus i use it as my AppleTV remote… no more looking under pillows….
And there is so much more to it if one cares to dig in.

    As for sales..
At least around me i see a lot more interest in Applewatch this year than i saw last year.
I see so many people sporting them everywhere
    And supply is super tight.
That does not paint a bad picture to me…not for a second !

    1. Ps.. re AppleWatch as Apple TV remote… in order for it to be more practical… set the ‘remote” app as a complication on your favorite face….. for direct and immediate access.

  4. I’m curious why you would state iPhone 7 sales increase as a percentage vs a percentage increase in sales of Android devices as a whole. That would only really be meaningful if the total devices sold in both groups in the past were close.

  5. I want to hear Apple stories about how wonderfully people are reacting to its products or what delightful stuff it’s releasing, not how much Microsoftian profits it’s making.

    1. Microsoftian? That would infer that Microsoft’s profits have ever been where Apple’s is.

In general, it’s the people that want their emotions validated that post about them. Happy people using products that make them happy don’t usually need their emotions validated.

    2. We got my mom, who is old, an apple watch to serve as a First Alert Monitor, in case she falls. She knows how to use Siri to make calls. Our family is happy with how useful the watch is.
