Tim Cook explains to Apple employees why he met with President-elect Trump

“In a series of answers to questions posted on Apple’s internal employee info service Apple Web today, CEO Tim Cook commented to employees on some hot-button topics,” Matthew Panzarino reports for TechCrunch. “First up is probably the most topical: Why did he feel it was important to meet with President-elect Trump? The short answer: You have to show up to have a say.”

“‘Personally, I’ve never found being on the sideline a successful place to be,’ writes Cook. ‘The way that you influence these issues is to be in the arena. So whether it’s in this country, or the European Union, or in China or South America, we engage. And we engage when we agree and we engage when we disagree. I think it’s very important to do that because you don’t change things by just yelling. You change things by showing everyone why your way is the best. In many ways, it’s a debate of ideas,'” Panzarino reports. “The response was given, specifically, to the following question: ‘Last week you joined other tech leaders to meet President-elect Donald Trump. How important is it for Apple to engage with governments?'”

MacDailyNews Take: Three quotes from Steve Jobs:

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.

A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

If you’re gonna make connections which are innovative… you have to not have the same bag of experiences as everyone else does.

  1. Maybe he should have explained WHY he supported corrupt Hillary for President instead, But the snowflakes that work at Apple apparently where OK with that, LOL

Pretty ridiculous for Pipeline Tim to feel he needed to explain why he met with the President!

    1. I think he explained it quite many times why he supported the other candidate. Trump’s campaign promised to kick illegal immigrants out, close the doors for new immigrants, impose tariffs for American companies manufacturing in China for the US market, pull out of Paris Climate Accord, etc. Apple as a company has generally always supported issues that are more commonly associated with progressive / liberal causes.

And for a company (and a CEO) that generally supports such causes, it is quite obvious why there would be the need to explain why they are now meeting with the President-Elect (the President is still Obama, for another month).

And his explanation is quite articulate. Apple has always supported very diverse work force. And if you look at MDN’s take, you’ll perhaps understand why Apple is so great at innovation. There is a great, immense value in embracing diversity. Only one country in the world can truly claim such rich diversity (America), and until this year, it has truly been the only place in the world that largely never discriminated against anyone. And this unique quality is the main reason America has become what it is.

When we think of all those Syrian refugees streaming out of Aleppo (and the rest of Syria), let us not forget, Steve Jobs was half-Syrian by birth…

      1. OMG how lost have we become when we think illegal immigrants have rights in this country and deserve to be treated with kid gloves or allowed to stay. What part of “illegal” do people not understand? Also what is wrong with carefully vetting people from a particularly known dangerous class of religion where radicalized members become violent terrorists? Maybe not the current generation but maybe a future one? Who can predict the future on this?

Many liberals suffer from too much “liberal guilt” and bend over backwards often to a potential of their or their kid’s & grandkid’s own peril. Life isn’t fair and the U.S. on it’s own will never make all things equal on this over-populated planet (f*cking ourselves out of existence) and it’s dwindling resources. “We must be cautious.” Being prudent isn’t a crime.

      2. Wait, Trump has threatened to uphold the laws onthe books? God forbid!

For Silicon Valley and Apple’s Tim Cook, it’s all about H-1B visas and cheap labor – see below). Even though Cook agrees more with Republicans than Democrats on corporate taxation and other issues, he cuts off his nose to spite his face.

Tim, it’d be cheaper to pay American workers a fair wage and get a sound corporate tax policy than it would be to continue importing cheap foreign labor on H-1B visas and be stuck with Democrats who love to overtax and tax the wrong things which stifles the economy overall (hurting the business of selling consumer goods, including electronics, by the way).

American companies and their shareholders, in general, want skilled labor as CHEAPLY as possible. That’s a main reason why Tim Cook, Apple and other tech firms are not supporting Trump – they want unlimited H-1Bs, so they can pay Ajeet from India half what they’d have to pay Tom from Tulsa who can’t find a job after graduating from college and has to live in his parents basement because Apple got Ajeet from India to do it on the CHEAP.

H1-B visas for skilled workers DO NOT EQUAL uneducated illegal aliens streaming across the southern border intent on cashing in on American taxpayer’s largesse while setting up shop in the domestic drug trade and/or other crimes (gangs, rape, robbery, etc.).

Trump is for upholding the laws already on the books designed to protect our borders and our nation’s sovereignty.

        Donald Trump’s official policy:

Increase prevailing wage for H-1Bs. We graduate two times more Americans with STEM degrees each year than find STEM jobs, yet as much as two-thirds of entry-level hiring for IT jobs is accomplished through the H-1B program. More than half of H-1B visas are issued for the program’s lowest allowable wage level, and more than eighty percent for its bottom two. Raising the prevailing wage paid to H-1Bs will force companies to give these coveted entry-level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in cheaper workers from overseas. This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities.

Requirement to hire American workers first. Too many visas, like the H-1B, have no such requirement. In the year 2015, with 92 million Americans outside the workforce and incomes collapsing, we need companies to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed. Petitions for workers should be mailed to the unemployment office, not USCIS.

End welfare abuse. Applicants for entry to the United States should be required to certify that they can pay for their own housing, healthcare and other needs before coming to the U.S.

Jobs program for inner city youth. The J-1 visa jobs program for foreign youth will be terminated and replaced with a resume bank for inner city youth provided to all corporate subscribers to the J-1 visa program.

Refugee program for American children. Increase standards for the admission of refugees and asylum-seekers to crack down on abuses. Use the monies saved on expensive refugee programs to help place American children without parents in safer homes and communities, and to improve community safety in high crime neighborhoods in the United States.

Immigration moderation. Before any new green cards are issued to foreign workers abroad, there will be a pause where employers will have to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed immigrant and native workers. This will help reverse women’s plummeting workplace participation rate, grow wages, and allow record immigration levels to subside to more moderate historical averages.

        1. PreDrugged and KindSmell in a love fest we have seen all too often. Gee, what a surprise. Two blind Apple Apologists trying to shine sh*t and sell it to the rest of us. NO SALE!

        2. The problem is really with the massive ideological division in America. Now that anyone can live in their ideological bubble and see and hear only what they want to see and hear, any conversation between the two ideological tribes has long ago ceased.

Larger problem is the fact that, because one only listens to what one wants to hear, there is practically zero exposure, for either side, to any alternative position. The fact that large percent of Americans continue to believe that their president was born overseas, that he is not of Christian faith, or that Hillary Clinton runs (or had run) a child prostitution ring out of a Washington, D.C. pizzeria tells you that America has come to a point where its people prefer to believe obviously fake news than to hear what those who are ideologically on the other side have to say.

Forums like MDN are probably the only place where such people can occasionally glimpse the opposing side. Judging by the reaction of quite many here, it is obvious that they simply refuse to even bother. Once the mind is set, and is reinforced by the echo-chamber of your like-minded people, there is no incentive to challenge one’s own mindset by looking outside.

In order to get a better picture of America, I make it a point to look across the spectrum: Fox, CNN, WSJ, NY Times, occasionally Huffington, the Blaze and similar. How many here can honestly say that?

        3. “In order to get a better picture of America, I make it a point to look across the spectrum: Fox, CNN, WSJ, NY Times, occasionally Huffington, the Blaze and similar. How many here can honestly say that?”

          Fox slightly right of center.
          CNN center-left.
          WSJ center-left.
          NYT center-left.
          Huffington left.
Blaze (assume you mean TheBlaze?) Is Glen Beck created conservative platform.

Would say if you want to call yourself well rounded you should add Townhall, and Breitbart in there. And read as many back catalogue articles from the retired Tomas Sowell as you can.

          http://townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/

I agree that Fox is somewhat conservative, but it is too mainstream and not where you’ll find the best and brightest conservative minds at.

      1. That’s all you got?

        Love the hat and revolver.

One thing for sure, Trump is a genius if you don’t allow your bias to get the best of you. What he has accomplished in so little time with so little campaign cash and so little media and political support from his own party, not to mention the Democrats, is truly remarkable and historic.

Sorry, you just don’t see it … 🇺🇸

        1. Look, I can see how the fans must be serially ejaculating with joy over the unlikely win.

Just to temper your enthusiasm a bit; there is nothing genius about telling the people anything they want to hear. According to virtually all fact-checking organisations, during the campaign, over 80% of purportedly factual statements Trump made during the campaign (“unemployment numbers are bogus!” “Crime rates are reaching record levels!”, etc) are simply completely made up.

If you tell the voters only the stuff they want to hear (“Well bring every single one of those jobs back!”), they tend to believe you; after all, you are running for office, so most people expect at least some level of honesty (average politician only lies about 20 – 30% of the time).

It remains to be seen how America will fare with Trump, but early signals aren’t good. While Trump tweets away, China prepares to retaliate against the US for the Taiwan insult….

        2. ….in which case, you missed what followed (an actual, factual argument, supporting the assertion that early signals aren’t good).

This is what is profoundly wrong with the American political discourse. When you see something you don’t like, something that doesn’t completely line up with your own perception, you simply reject it, regardless of any facts. More importantly (and worse), when you see something that lines up with your own view of the world, you embrace it, regardless of how factually incorrect (fake news) it may be.

        3. “According to virtually all fact-checking organisations”

And every one of them are leftist propaganda machines. Rasmussen did a poll saying that American’s had only about a 30% confidence in the so-called “fact checkers” and could tell that they were politically biassed. There are numerous examples of extreme and flagrant bias, one example that I recall, they said that Trump was lying when he said Hillary used acid to clean her servers when she used a program called “BleachBit” which is different, but it is a distinction without a meaningful difference and thus mindless nit picking. That’s not what I would consider “fact checking”.

Thus the 80% fabricated figure you used is simply gas lighting for Clinton that fell flat.

“While Trump tweets away, China prepares to retaliate against the US for the Taiwan insult….”

While Trump sets our foreign policy based upon what makes sense for the US, China will do what is good for China. I’m not very impressed by your foreign policy views when you apparently have no problem with China building fake islands so they can lay illegitimate claims to open seas so they can drill for oil, and China can steal islands that belong to Vietnam, and China can do whatever it wants with its currency and trade barriers when we don’t do the same to them. I’m not advocating we go to war with China, but there’s no reason we should bend over backward or kowtow to them, they have no right to push the US or any of our allies around.

I am very happy that your side lost, and very happy that Trump will be the next president.

        4. Trump won with a minority of the vote. That is indisputable. He has also rapidly flipped on a number of campaign issues. That is also indisputable. He established the foundation of his campaign with alt-right extremists and is nominating people sympathetic to those views. Once again, indisputable.

Trump a genius? Laughable. Show me his Mensa membership…

        5. No, you are laughable.

You don’t see the Trump genuis and ALL THE POWERFUL FORCES AND 1.2 BILLION spent against a political neophyte.

Yet he won a historical victory!

And in your serious denial and election withdrawal mode, guess what, your comments amount to ZERO.

Looking forward to Jan. 21st! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

        6. “Trump won with a minority of the vote.”

Bill Clinton with even less of the vote. Immaterial. Presidents do not win elections based upon the “popular vote”, and never will.

          “That is indisputable.

And irrelevant. And very disputable due to the unknown number of illegal immigrants who voted and whose votes should never be counted.

“He has also rapidly flipped on a number of campaign issues.”

No one that supports him is saying that, only anti Trump people are saying this. Thus it is clearly a lie.

          “That is also indisputable.”

          It’s indisputably false.

“He established the foundation of his campaign with alt-right extremists and is nominating people sympathetic to those views.”

Anyone not as far left as KingMel = extremist. Gotcha.

          “Once again, indisputable.”

Once again, you have no clue. Stick to commenting on Apple.

        7. I don’t need anything else when referring to sTrumpettes. They are parrots, parroting a serial liar, sexual assaulter, tax avoider, swindler, failed businessman that had to be repeatedly bailed out, petty and spiteful orange clown with bad hair.

        8. Page one of the PC playbook courtesy of CX:

“They are parrots, parroting a serial liar, sexual assaulter, tax avoider, swindler, failed businessman that had to be repeatedly bailed out, petty and spiteful orange clown with bad hair.”

          Any questions?

        9. Yes. What is this fictitious playbook you reference. No one has ever shown me a “playbook” or told me as a Liberal I had to think or act a certain way. Isn’t that just your ignorance showing?

        10. My ignorance is showing?

I have got to give you credit for the artful liberal dodge that the Clinton’s are famous for, as well as, PC People everywhere.

That is, when confronted with the truth about themselves they ignore the question and immediately try to turn it around on the accuser denying EVERYTHING.

You get a gold star for your tired technique, hollow and shallow as it may be … ⭐️

        11. Ya know, CX — I always believed liberals were open minded and opposed to hate. But after reading your insulting, sterotypical, PC laden post full of hate for Trump, The shoe is now on the other foot. Pity.

        12. Liberals are open minded and opposed to hate. Any comments about the sTrumpster and sTrumpettes are based on observable behaviors. Just because you are too stupid to recognize it, doesn’t make it any less true.

        13. Liberals like you continue to spew HATE and you’re too stupid to admit your OWN BLIND BEHAVIOR! 🐂💩

          Liberals stereotype everyone.

Liberals put everyone into groups and assign hate speech labels to those they don’t like, just because they have the constitutional freedoms to see things differently.

Exhibit Number One, your honor: sTrumpster and sTrumpettes. I rest my case. Jury, do we have a verdict? Yes we do your honor — GUILTY!

Not exactly fair and opened minded, but I know you are incapable of nuanced understanding …

        14. Great posts, TMoon. Much more eloquent and factual. CX just buys into the overbearing MSM LIBERAL MEDIA modus operandi. He knows full well the groups he can disparage without repercussions and the boundaries of liberal defense.

A perfect recipe for a partisan mind numbed non-thinker.

    1. To regressive progressives, that’s not enough because to them Trump is the racist-sexist-homophobic-xenophobic-transphobic-xyzpdqphobic-bigot boogyman. It’s about the feels, not about facts or logic.

      1. Give me a break. The GOP is the party of governing by “gut feel” over science and fact. There is no way that I am going to let you try to skew thingslike that. I operate on fact and logic. If you think differently, then you are dead wrong.

        1. YOu have to provide facts and sources in order to argue. Your side is frequently very thin on facts and sources, and strong on gut feeling and ideological dogma. While the other side often resorts to ideology, they have a much stronger habit of actually backing it up with easily provable facts and data.

        2. I don’t have to provide any facts to a closed minded know-it-all lefty loon that conflates facts, only recognizes facts to fit his arguments, world class provider of selective facts and half-truths.

You don’t argue with LIBTARDS, you pity them.

        3. You seem to be truly confused.

I am not an American. Therefore, not Republican, not a Democrat, I don’t fit in any of your compartments or labels. When I’m interested in the news about American political discourse, I look at WSJ, NY Times, Fox News, CNN, The Blaze, Huffington Post. This is absolutely the ONLY way to actually get a decent picture about your country. Regrettably, very few Americans do this, and vast majority has actually no clue where the truth lies.

        4. I know exactly where the truth lies.

And it certainly is not with you, sorry.

Lastly, since you are not an American voter/resident — so please keep your tedious partisan socialist opinings to yourself.

          Thanks in advance. 🎄⭐️🎄⭐️🎄

        5. Well, clearly you don’t, and clearly I do.

If you hadn’t noticed, MDN is a public web site accessible form anywhere in the world. Also, while most participants in these discussions are Americans, many are not. There is absolutely no way you (or anyone else like you) can arbitrarily prevent or prohibit anyone else from sharing thoughts, opinions, and facts.

          Partisan? Well, that’s rich…

        6. “Well, clearly you don’t, and clearly I do.”

Well clearly you only think you do and clearly
          I do.

“If you hadn’t noticed, MDN is a public web site accessible form anywhere in the world.”

Really, am I on the Internet? Holy cow … mother!

“Also, while most participants in these discussions are Americans, many are not.”

That would be YOU. I would appreciate if you keep your globalist socialist views to yourself. You have no skin in the American game. And it is painfully clear from a distance you are serially wrong.

“There is absolutely no way you (or anyone else like you) can arbitrarily prevent or prohibit anyone else from sharing thoughts, opinions, and facts.”

I asked you brainless and clueless moron who is incapable of reading comprehension! You don’t have facts because you don’t live here. You don’t have boots on the ground experience because you don’t live here. All you have is the media distortion field and your left wing globalist religion.

          “Partisan? Well, that’s rich…”

Probably a lot richer than you.

Thanks in advance for not commenting on a country you know nothing about from WITHIN.

Resistance is futile, see you later … 😈

        7. Whether you personally operate on “fact and logic” does not mean the bulk of progressives do. Anyone whose ideology can only be maintained by demagoguing any alternative ideas and immediately and mindlessly slapping “racist-xenophobic-bigot-sexist-etc.” on top to dismiss the threatening alternative view is nowhere near facts, logic, reason, or science.

There’s no way you can credibly argue that the GOP is less grounded in reason and reality than the Democrat when we have had weeks of gnashing at the teeth when Hillary lost, calling Trump supporters racist when many of the people who voted for him twice voted for Obama, and let’s not even get into the anti vaccination movement which is largely comprised of educated white liberals.

The GOP didn’t riot in the street for weeks when Obama won twice. They just accepted the outcome and went back to work. Your side will have another election in the future where they will have a chance to redeem themselves, assuming they can pull their head out of their ass and stop blaming everyone but themselves for their catastrophic implosion.

    2. Yes, mjmj. Also, can you imagine SJ feeling the need to tell his employees (now snowflakes), about such a meeting in a justifying way? I’ll add my own, “jheesh.” IMO, this “need” is a differentiating personality characteristic that makes Tim’s Apple subservient to something other than Steve’s product superiority pursuit. Tim is really a follower. Steve didn’t give a flip about such things…time was a-wastin’.

      1. Rainbow Tim was pushed into a corner by the Apple (snowflake) employees food fighting in the cafeteria. But your absolutely right. Steve did not give a rat’s ass regarding politics. I have long given up hope and change Cook would stick to Apple business.

  2. Obama asked SJ to bring jobs back to USA. Jobs said “no”, and Obama left, cowering. Tim’s upset face shows that Trump knows how to negotiate. Obama did not know how to negotiate. That’s why Putin took Crimea. That is why Putin took parts of Ukraine. That is why Putin knows he can get away with bombing civilians in Syria. And that’s why we have refugees all over Europe. The flood of refugees is why the UK is leaving the European Union. Obama’s failure leads to people demanding sovereignty over their own lives. Americans realized that. Americans rejected Obama’s failed leadership. Americans rejected Obama’s failed policies. Americans rejected Obamas legacy. Obama blew it! LET’S MOVE ON!

    1. If only it was so simple. We of course focus on the leader of the times and think they run the show. But there is so much more going on behind the scene. I like to point out the utterly braindead corporatocracy going on right now, which has corrupted and gutted BOTH the Republican and Democrat parties. Then there’s that obvious allure of cheap labor that literally mandated that companies kill US operations and go to the cheap labor sources. Then there’s the consumer mandate for cheap products that forced the allure of cheap labor that drives corporatocracy that lives in the house that Jack built, blahblahblah. 😉

  3. Jobs could be so incredibly smart. He of course got that way by learning…

If you’re gonna make connections which are innovative… you have to not have the same bag of experiences as everyone else does.

Or, as I tend to rant:
There is no such thing as a viable monoculture.
    Diversity Rules.
Perspective is everything. So get some
    ….
