“Apple has been ordered to cut a $2 million check for denying some of its retail workers meal breaks,” Sara Ashley O’Brien reports for CNNMoney.
“The lawsuit was first filed in 2011 by four Apple employees in San Diego,” O’Brien reports. “They alleged that the company failed to give them meal and rest breaks, and didn’t pay them in a timely manner, among other complaints.”
“California law requires employers to give hourly workers a 30 minute meal break if they’re working more than five hours a day. They’re also require to provide 10 minute breaks for every four hours worked.,” O’Brien reports. “Jeffrey Hogue, one of the attorneys who represented the class action, said the $2 million verdict came down last Friday — but Apple could owe more money. The second half of the case is expected to conclude next week, Hogue told CNNMoney.”

Its California. They have unrealistic laws when it comes to this. Especially for retail. Been there myself. If it gets busy and employees lose track of time (easy to do) and dont take a break guess what CA says? You are liable. Even though there is no intenet. No intent sound familiar….
But all you Apple haters (jealous muc) will say they deserved it. I call BS.
One article pointed out that each plaintiff in the lawsuit will be rewarded $95, before taxes. Not a great windfall. Not a bit dent in Apple’s budget. But ripping off employees of break time is a brilliant morale killer. Not a good thing by any measure.
This is odd.. I have a couple old roommates that work at Apple stores and they would complain how their leadership would get on their case or threaten documentation if they didn’t take their required breaks on time.. Even if their shift was 5 1/2 hours, managers would force them to take a half no matter what.
