Like Apple, Google plans to build a Car OS, not a car

“It looks like Apple isn’t the only big tech firm changing its go to market strategy for self-driving cars, as Google also intends to abandon manufacturing plans in favor or creating an operating system auto makers can use,” Jonny Evans writes for Computerworld.

The Information (via Patently Apple) claims Google/Alphabet has decided to abandon plans to make its own vehicles in order to focus on developing the operating systems for autonomous vehicles,” Evans writes. “Wired says Google will be hosting a self-driving car press event in California today.”

“Google’s news follows recent whispers claiming Apple has also changed its plans for self-driving vehicles,” Evans writes. “In October, reports claimed Apple had decided to focus on the OS, rather than car construction.”

  1. I really enjoy that apple still having fun spreading false rumors and seeing how the copy cats try to get ahead of apple and after billions invested, apple just come out with something very different and force every copy cat to trow those billions to the trash and start all over again.
You got to love apple’s sense of humor.

  2. No great surprise the prototypes Google run certainly have little relation in a rational world, to a finished desirable product, so maybe even they couldn’t delude themselves that they could sell such things. Google Glass maybe was a salutary lesson.

  3. Well, good.

Can you imagine taking your Apple car to a normal mechanic and getting charge normal prices? Can you imagine an Apple product with blackend grease and dirt stuck to its innards? And how about protection from road salt…ain’t no case or cover (or sock) for a car.

    It’s really a bad fit

However, I can buy a Honda with an Apple brain? NICE!

    1. Three’s not much that needs grease on an electrically powered car. Servicing of electrical cars is much simpler in many ways because there are fewer moving parts requiring regular maintenance.

When the parts are more reliable, service intervals become longer and there is less need for easy access to the mechanical components, so it’s much easier to better protect them from water and salt, which in turn makes them more reliable.

Electric cars really need to be designed from the ground up in order to take maximum advantage of the opportunities offered. Converting a petrol engined car to electric is always going to be a poor compromise. Take a look at Jaguar’s work on a new electrically power range of vehicles to see how they have understood the need for a totally new design optimised for electrical power.

      1. And of course, there is that huge increase in the supply of electricity that is coming in future decades……………………uh………….. and how well the batteries will function in cold climates…………………..uhhhhhhh….never mind.
