Apple releases tvOS 10.1

Apple today released tvOS 10.1 for the fourth-generation Apple TV.

“The update is now available to all fourth-generation Apple TVs through Software Update in the native Settings app,” Mike Wuerthele reports for AppleInsider

tvOS 10.1 “now includes the previously-announced single sign-on,” Wuerthele reports. “The feature lets people enter their cable, satellite, or streaming TV credentials once, and have them automatically entered into third-party apps that require subscription account information.”

“Also included with tvOS 10.1, is Apple’s new ‘TV’ app,” Wuerthele reports. “he app is designed with discovery in mind, making it easier for users to find content across providers, including the user’s own library of media.”

    1. I don’t think there is anyway to do this with software. Another Tim Cook slow drip pipeline. Besides Eddy Cue doesn’t want to be Netflix I have all versions of the Apple TV and the latest version is by far the most disappointing one. Remember it was suppose to have a skinny bundle and hopefully a movie streaming. Inside an awful remote and tired design.

    2. I think it’s possible, the graphics chip in the A8 can support 4K resolutions. But, I think it would be limited to 30hz because the hdmi port is 1.4 I believe. Could be completely wrong about that, but i believe that is the case.

  1. New TV app on Apple TV is basically crap. No Netflix content. Something few needed.

SSO only has a few TV providers, big ones like Verizon are not there.

Crap, big NOTHING. Tim Cook strikes again!

  2. It cannot.

The ATV has inadequate processing and HDMI version 1.4 which cannot support 2160p framerate above 24 hz, which is practically unwatchable on a large screen. That does not meet UHD specs, which has a 60 hz framerate and needs HDMI 2.0 or preferably DisplayPort 1.3.

Apple apparently is willing to miss the 4K wave building now. Every other video company has 4K offerings in stores now. Timid Tim is turning Apple into another one trick pony has-been. Enjoy your emoji Timmy!

  3. I’ve got two 55″ 4K tvs, and an ATV 4th gen, and a Roku 4k device, and I don’t know what the big fuss is about. There’s still a long way to go before there’s enough 4K material out there to make me miss it or need it. I have to go out of my way to find 4K material, which means it’s not really worth complaining about. The 4K tvs do a decent enough job with upscaling. For me, I’m only interested in live 4k sports, not VOD or buying 4K blurays.

Who knew there were so many video snobs? It must cost an ungodly amount to go all 4K. You’ve got to be your big 4K HDR set. Get a 4K dolby atmos receiver. Get your 7.2 speaker setup. Subscribe to whomever is streaming some 4K programming Amazon or Netflix, which I don’t. Get a 4K bluray player. Buy some 4K blurays. Get the latest docsis 3.1 modem. Get a fancy mesh wifi network to stream all that bandwidth to your tv. Seriously. I’m having a hard time keeping up.

  4. I setup my ATV with the new TVos, and it works fine. Better than before. Now, it’s all aggregated in one place. I don’t have to go to FXNow to see what VOD I can watch, I can just go to the TV app and see a list of movies that are available to watch on all the apps at the same time. Done.

  5. I finally called Apple when my ATV 4 screensaver would not change to any mode. It has been stuck on the same home sharing photos stuck in the cache for weeks. So my folder of Christmas pictures won’t show for the first time in years.

The first guy I talked to said he had not had anyone complain about the screensaver. I suggested he look on line and see several years worth of complaints about the tiny cache. I was trying to explain what was happening – and he hung up on me! I called again and actually got a great guy who knew exactly what was happening. He had a 4 with the same exact problem. In fact, he told me there was no fix or workaround and that the screensaver was just stuck, a known issue. I would have to reset. That wasn’t a problem so much on the 3, but now there are tons of apps and settings and no backup. I would have to reset everything.

BUT – he was running the beta of the TVOS (that came out today.) He said that it fixed the issue and would come out any day now. I was thrilled to hear someone finally paid attention to this aggravating issue. I mean it is what is used the most on ATVs, the screensaver.

So I have been checking everyday for the update. Today it was there! I updated and couldn’t wait to see things work.

They didn’t. Same problem. No solution. No hope. So I guess I get to spend the day tomorrow reregisterring all of my apps and signing back into all the services. I guess Eddy Cue must be in charge of the Apple TV, huh. Steve would have said, “Idiot. You’re fired” long ago.

  6. Just did the Apple TV update. What a fucking hot mess the TV app is. If you have a TV provider you have to sign in to EACH app individually and activate them separately from your smartphone for EVERY channel (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Nat Geographic, HBO, PBS, Showtime, etc, etc, etc). Holy crapshow Batman!

It’s outstanding someone at Apple thought this should be released to consumers. The average consumer won’t take the time to hassle with this BS.

  7. And yet I still cannot use Siri to play a movie or tv show that I already have on my computer. Nope I get to scroll through hundreds of movies before I get to a movie that starts with an N.

  8. My two week old Apple TV became unusable after the 10.1 update. Apps won’t open and it turns itself off and on. I changed the hdmi cec setting on my tv, did a fresh install of tvOS and tried other fixes that some people had luck with. Nothing. Guess I’ll just return it and keep using my Apple TV 3rd gen.

  9. Hey, I tried out the app yesterday after the update. I found that some shows that were carried by a channel would direct earlier seasons to Netflix. IIRC this happened with Agents of Shield. Season 1 was available and selecting that brought up a option to go to Netflix. When selected the episode started right away in Netflix.
So it looks like Apple is using Netflix as a companion to content deliver directly from the channel.
Still go to play around with this. Ideally I want to be able to select my favorite shows and get content including the back catalog from that link.
My only other beef is that Comcast Xfinity does not allow one time login so have to go through all the channels to set up.
