HP launches 4K ENVY display with USB-C for Apple’s new MacBook Pro

“HP today launched its 27-inch ENVY display with 4K Ultra HD resolution and a built-in USB-C port for charging the new MacBook Pro, 12-inch MacBook, or most other USB-C devices at up to 60 watts over a single cable,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.

“The IPS LED-backlit display features a clean design with a micro-edge bezel, matte black rear panel, and a thin aluminum stand,” Rossignol reports. “The base can be detached for VESA wall or arm mounting, but a bracket is not included.”

“HP’s new ENVY 27 Display is available on HP.com and at select retailers in the United States for $499 starting today,” Rossignol reports. “One display that may be a better buy in the near term is a href=”http://amzn.to/2h3r1R2″ target=”_new”>LG’s and Apple’s new UltraFine 4K display. While it has a smaller 21.5-inch screen, the UltraFine has true 4K resolution (4,096×2,304), built-in speakers, 3 additional USB-C ports, higher 500 cd/m2 brightness, and a wider DCI-P3 color gamut. LG’s UltraFine 4K display is $524 — only $25 extra — until December 31.”

MacDailyNews Take: While we’re likely going to go with the Apple-backed LG, we will be strategically placing Apple stickers right straight over than LG logo. Hey, at least we can dream/reminisce/pretend, right?

    1. From the front, HP and LG look pretty much the same to me. But at the back there is big difference. HP has only one USB-C port to connect and charge Mac laptop. LG has additional three downstream USB-C ports making it a nice hub for peripherals. Oh, and there is also front-facing camera and microphone that works with FaceTime and integrated speakers – no wonder Apple went with LG. It is much full featured then bare bones HP.

    2. As far as I can tell, the LG at 1.7″ vs Dell 1.58″ thick and about the same weight.

      I haven’t seen either in person, so I can’t tell if one is uglier than the other. In my studios, the ones I have had in designing, most of my professional* contacts/colleagues and even at home are placed against dark walls. Can’t see, care or want to the bezels.

      (And more than often, the best ones were the heaviest in their class.)

      In fact, for my home, I had some of the bezels (especially one that came in silver) of our flat screens painted to blend in with the walls. Really pops out the images.

    1. Common wisdom says Apple just solders in last year’s components and upcharges 20% for the service.

      As for the HP display — probably worth a look. I find it hard to believe that such a vain fashion oriented leader would be pushing a gray plastic LG display with unequal bezel instead of something with a bit of design to it.

      And more to the point – MDN hates Korean companies. Do they therefore endorse these products from wintel maker HP? Or are you saving your official endorsement for the excellent displays from the only other major US computer company, the one starting with a D?

          Apple’s leadership laziness just punted another product line to 3rd parties that don’t offer what used to be superior Apple levels of refinement. Truth hurts doesn’t it? Enjoy your grey plastic box.

        2. Such witty repartee is fun, but only when you bring something to the table. Go ahead and attempt to refute the facts, wise guy.

          Fact: Apple has among the highest margins in the computer industry. By definition, that means they add a higher price markup than other makers.

          Fact: unlike many computer makers, Apple now seals most of its Mac units and actively prevents its users from easily making any internal upgrades.

          Fact: Apple branded displays used to offer a premium experience and higher quality materials that matched Macs. Apple has always pushed fashion as part of the experience — lately to the extreme with some product lines — but with the endorsement of grey plastic LG displays, Apple has shockingly abandoned that strategy.

          Fact: MDN is on record for badmouthing Apple competitors or any company that does anything it doesn’t personally like. Even when those companies are Apple frienemies, acting as both supplier and competitor. LG and Samsung are both suppliers and competitors to Apple, both Korean, and both with a copycat legacy. MDN picks on Samsung at every opportunity but always gives LG a free pass. Consistency?

          Fact:: if you want to support the American economy, you can get as good or better displays from other brands. MDN is alternatively patriot and then irrational fanboy whenever it suits their inconsistent ways.

          Please feel free to respond with constructive points. It’s okay to act like a big boy on the internet instead of an immature ass. Try it sometime.

    1. Good question! Amazon doesn’t carry them. Look elsewhere for the latest and greatest monitors.

      I have never been more disappointed that Apple is totally losing touch of the personal computer market. Why doesn’t Apple understand the importance of big screen real estate for getting stuff done? There is a demand for a family of Apple displays if Apple would just keep up with the state of tech.

      Much as MDN hates to admit it, the other US computer companies are more than capable of producing what people want. For large UHD displays, Dell comes to the rescue with this:

  1. MDN… good idea with the Apple Logo..
    but what about the Apple design theme..

    why cant the most poweful technology company in the world not be able to at least design its own housing for their monitors .. something consistent with Apple design theme.
    forget Profit… break even… just freaking have it availible … consider it part of Marketing /advertising, visibility, satisfying your customer need … completing the lineup….etc….
    not everything is about immediate dollars and cents .. ..
    The Big picture is where those are.
