Apple turns (RED) with more ways than ever to join the fight to end AIDS

In honor of World AIDS Day, Apple is offering more ways than ever for customers to join (RED) in its mission to create an AIDS-free generation. Apple is the world’s largest corporate contributor to the Global Fund, and this year marks its 10th anniversary supporting (RED) in the fight to end AIDS.

(RED)’s critical work addresses the disparity in access to life-saving medication in sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest prevalence of AIDS on the planet. The money raised by (RED) funds programs that offer counseling, testing, prevention and, most crucially, the life-saving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their unborn babies.

“The gift of life is the most important gift that anyone can give,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of (RED), an AIDS-free generation is within our reach. We want to leave the world better than we found it, and that’s why our longtime partnership with (RED) remains so important to us.”

This year, Apple customers can support the fight while playing the games they love, shopping for loved ones ahead of the holiday season or listening to an exclusive (RED) holiday album from The Killers.

For the next week, a range of the most popular games across the App Store — spanning from racing and sports titles to strategy, puzzle and action games — are offering limited-edition, custom (RED) content, exclusively available on the App Store. All proceeds from the associated in-app purchases go to the Global Fund.

The 20 participating games include Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds POP!, Best Fiends, Best Fiends Forever, Boom Beach, Candy Crush Jelly Saga, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, CSR2, Episode, Farm Heroes Saga, FarmVille: Tropic Escape, FIFA Mobile, Hay Day, MARVEL Contest of Champions, PewDiePie’s Tuber Simulator, Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, SimCity BuildIt, War Dragons and YAHTZEE With Buddies.

In addition to the current (PRODUCT)RED lineup, which is available for customers to purchase year-round, Apple is also adding four new (RED) products including an iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case, iPhone SE Case, Beats Solo 3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones and the Pill+ Portable Speaker, which are all available today.

Over 400 Apple Stores on five continents will turn their logos red or feature (RED) window decals to raise visibility for World AIDS Day in Apple’s most widespread implementation of support for (RED) at its stores. Apple Store employees will share all the ways our customers can join us in supporting (RED) and the fight against AIDS.

Starting tomorrow through December 6, Apple is donating $1 to (RED)’s mission for every purchase made with Apple Pay at an Apple Store, on Apple.com or through the Apple Store app, up to $1 million. Bank of America will also make a donation for every Apple Pay transaction using its cards, also up to $1 million.

Customers around the world can also easily donate directly to (RED) through iTunes. In the US, iTunes Movies is offering a free download of The Lazarus Effect, the documentary about the mission of (RED).

The Killers’ holiday album, Don’t Waste Your Wishes, is exclusively available on iTunes featuring all 10 of their holiday singles, as well as a new track, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” with 100 percent of the proceeds in the US going to the Global Fund.

Over the past 10 years, 70 million lives have been impacted by (RED)-supported Global Fund grants. At the start of Apple’s partnership with (RED), 1,200 babies were born with HIV every day, and today, UNAIDS predicts that number could be near zero by the year 2020, with the end of AIDS by 2030.

With the life-saving medication costing as little as 30 cents a day, every person can make a difference. Through these efforts we’ll get that much closer to helping (RED) create an AIDS-free generation.

  1. Here’s an idea!
Keep your dick out of men’s assholes.
No govt. money was used for this message.
(RED) is just a marketing gimmick to make you feel like your purchase has actually done something. But it hasn’t. All it does is show you are a sucker.

      1. While incidence of HIV/AIDS among gay men may be higher (than among hetero) in America, the vast majority of HIV/AIDS cases isn’t in America; it is in sub-Saharan Africa, where straight population has been decimated by the disease, and where Global Fund (and PRODUCT(RED) campaign) do most of their work.

Homophobia is a fascinating thing. It makes people invent facts in order to support their fear and loathing of homosexuals.

    1. Bigotry in full display! In all fairness, perhaps not necessarily bigotry, just cluelessness.

First, about this fascination with anal sex among homosexuals. According to extensive studies, the prevalence of anal sex among homosexuals is almost the same as it is among the heterosexuals. In other words, straight people put their d!cks into @ssholes just as often as gay people. Yet, those anti-gay advocates seem completely fixated on the anal sex part of the whole thing. Fascinating.

Second, the Global Fund (the beneficiaries of the PRODUCT(RED) campaign). It is one of the most efficient charitable organisations with global reach, with a very high percentage of contributions going straight to the actual activities to combat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

And PRODUCT(RED) has contributed hundreds of millions of US dollars towards this initiative, which resulted in very specific outcomes (people vaccinated against malaria, education and treatment for those affected with AIDS, antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis, etc).

While we can debate the social benefit of “slactivism” campaigns such as (RED) (where people get to feel like they are doing good without actually doing anything they won’t normally do), the results are very concrete. Lives have been saved by the money raised by PRODUCT(RED).

So, what you said is simply completely incorrect and not based on facts.

      1. The plain fact is that HIV/AIDS explodes in non-monogamous population groups—whether they or homosexual or heterosexual—just like any other sexually transmitted disease. No sex—outside of a single lifelong partner—and there is virtually no spread of AIDS.

Meanwhile, in monogamous population groups, AIDS has almost ZERO chance to spread. The vast, vast majority of monogamous people have absolutely zero chance of getting AIDS outside of extremely rare circumstances. For example, it would be easier for an AIDS patient to be infected by a doctor than the other way around.

In other words, we know absolutely how to stop AIDS without any further research necessary, but people don’t want to change their lifestyle choices.

        1. That is entirely untrue. Vast majority of AIDS infections happen from monogamous relationships. While many of those are pre-marital, nonetheless, they fall into the category of committed, adult relationships.

In all fairness, the sub-Saharan Africa has an outsized share of extra-marital and non-consensual situations, which have a strong cultural legacy. Developed countries (EU, US, etc) have progressed beyond the traditional social model where the wife is subservient to the husband, catering to his needs (sexual and otherwise) without the right to say anything, and the husband is largely forgiven for extramarital transgressions, which are traditionally blamed on the unsatisfying wife that doesn’t meet his needs, forcing the poor man to seek it outside of the marriage. However, large portions of the developing world still cling to this old model, which is fertile ground for HIV/AIDS.

We can easily judge people and their lifestyles, pontificate about purported lack of their desire to change it, but that judgement won’t stop the epidemic. The only way to slow it is to empower everyone to defend themselves from it within the cultural contexts of their society. That means teaching women (and men) about condoms, educating them about the deadly disease and influencing their behaviour.

      2. Bigotry is right!!
Only a product for a gay disease.
No product (PINK) for breast cancer…?
No product (PURPLE) for pancreatic cancer…? Total disrespect for Steve on that one.
I guess Timmy Boy only cares about his sodomizing brethren when it comes to worthy causes.
        He’s such a bigot!

        1. You are truly misguided. Let’s deconstruct that thought.

There are very many diseases that afflict this world. Some are quite deadly, and for all sorts of reasons, there is varying level of support for them. The ones you are mentioning are actually quite high-profile ones, with broad support and a large number of charities mobilising resources for them.

I don’t think there is anything similar to the campaign PRODUCT(RED) that you’re referring to. Product (PINK) doesn’t exist, nor does Product (PURPLE). Whoever told you about them lied to you. There are organisations collecting donations for research in these two types of cancers, but none have the campaign resembling PRODUCT(RED) (in which manufacturers take percentage of their net sales on a product and donate to a charity).

As for Cook (and Apple), PRODUCT(RED) is NOT the only cause to which they donate money. They have given to a wide variety of causes, including a matching charitable giving plan, where the company matches employees’ donations to whichever charity they choose.

And again, your fixation on anal sex is quite fascinating here…

        2. AIDS is a disease brought on by behavior. Sure, there are cases where a blood transfusion or possibly rape can infect you. But I’ll wager that 99.9% of all AIDS cases could have been avoided by self control.
Cancers are just a fucking roll of the dice. You can’t just change your behavior and say I’m not going get cancer.
As far as anal sex goes, not really interested in it. It’s just the main culprit behavior that spread this fucking disease.
Just like an unwanted pregnancy. If you know what causes it but did it anyway, don’t bitch and moan and play victim.
Hey, I just thought of a new cause. Product (Prego).

        3. One could easily argue that many cases of cancer are brought on by lifestyle and/or diet choices. The argument is strongly supported by the evidence that finds noticeably lower incidence in parts of the world that are know for healthy lifestyle and and nutrition. One other important thing to keep in mind is that what we call with the universal catch-all name Cancer is in fact a wide variety of very different diseases that affect people and are treated in very different ways, with wide variety of outcomes. While they do have things in common (which is why we call them all cancer), they are in fact quite different and it is very dangerous and ignorant to call them the same when discussing things like incidence, survival rates, treatment, etc.

As for the main culprit of AIDS, for the past (at least) 25 years, it has been unprotected heterosexual intercourse (which is mostly the traditional vaginal penetration).

And much like unwanted pregnancy, pontificating about lifestyle choices doesn’t resolve the problem. This is even more cynical when it often comes from the conservative parts of the society that tend to perpetuate the social order that precludes large segments of the population from making their own lifestyle choices (such as decisions to deny the husband sex, or demand the use of condom). Majority of new HIV/AIDS cases in the world (sub-Saharan Africa) happen in heterosexual relationships where marital infidelity of a husband brought him the infection, which he (often knowingly) spread to his wife, who had no power to prevent it. As I mentioned in my prior message, the ultra-conservative mindset of the society allows that husband to freely seek extra-marital sex with impunity (legal, and moral), meanwhile denying the wife the right to prevent him from infecting her. None of this has anything to do with anal sex or homosexuality.

Global Fund (and other AIDS-related charities) work towards re-educating those societies and empowering those women.

If you disagree with this, how would you fight global spread of AIDS?

  2. How about more focus on improving hardware and software quality?

Apple quality is way, way down and dropping like a rock. They can’t innovate unless the competition comes out with it first so they have something to copy.

Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave right now.

    1. One way or another, I don’t believe what you ask is true.

At most you have to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth. What you ask is mostly shown on TV.

Whether you can or cannot display the Ten Commandments in front of a court house, hasn’t stopped municipalities from doing so.

  3. While we wait for the visionary CEO, it’d be nice to at least have a caretaker CEO who cares more about having up-to-date wares on the shelves than about being a social justice warrior.
