Apple begins issuing activity challenges to Apple Watch owners

“If you’ve got an Apple Watch, you’ll probably have already noticed that the company issued a challenge via the device: walk, run, or wheelchair 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) on Thanksgiving Day, and you’ll get yourself a special badge in the Activity app,” Dan Moren writes for Six Colors.

“Personally, I think it’s a great idea,” Moren writes. “Not only for all of us to get out and get some exercise, but also to use the Apple Watch’s social elements—such as Activity Sharing, which I think is a sadly overlooked part of watchOS 3—to add a little bit of peer-pressure incentive.”

“Having spent a bit of time testing out the Nike version of the watch, I can certainly attest to the fact that the thing is particularly good at bugging me when it thinks I’ve been sitting around too long,” Brian Heater writes for TechCrunch.

“This year the Apple Watch is celebrating the holiday with the Thanksgiving Day Challenge, a small stakes challenge aimed at getting wearers to move a modest 5k during the day, a nod, no doubt to the annual Turkey Trot race – and humankind’s on-going struggles against the nap-inducing effects of tryptophan,” Heater writes. “Apple Watch users can send the motivation notification to others and brag about it with stickers over social media when they’ve unlocked the goal through running, walking or wheelchair activity. The challenge is available through the Activity app today and goes live on Thursday.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’d like to see more of this from Apple. The capability exists and challenges of this sort are perfect for those wearing Apple Watches, especially those wearing Apple Watch Nike+ (the Apple Watch for runners).

With travel planned around and even on Thanksgiving, we weren’t planning on running, but we will bang out a 5K now, thanks explicitly to Apple’s Thanksgiving Day challenge. So, yes, this type of motivation does work!

    1. Well, that took a major effort to decipher.

One thing I learned the hard way: when you shift between different languages on iOS, make sure your chosen keyboard layout moves with the language. Nothing worse than trying to type in English while the keyboard (and auto-correct) is set to French (or Czech)…

  2. Pffft.
    Apple wanch.
A Tim Cook useless piece of Apple kit, the Apple Watch.
I bought a cheaper Pebble Watch and really have not found the watch very useful for anything.
Other than for weather, it’s a pretty useless “smart” watch.
I can’t use it for a daily sleep monitor as the sleep monitor app on the watch sucks the life out of the watch battery and eats up battery life on my iPod Touch.
Why do we stIl need freakin’ watches in the 21st century when every other mobile devide we own have clocks on them.
We better see some serious improvements from Apple for iPads and Macs in early 2017.
Apple and Mr. Cook, lately, just disappoints.
iOS 10, is a HUGE disappointment for iPad users, IMSO.
