NBCUniversal inks deal to handle Apple News ad sales

“Apple Inc. is outsourcing ad sales for Apple News to NBCUniversal,” Mike Shields reports for The Wall Street Journal. “As part of a new partnership between the two companies, NBCUniversal will be able to sell ads across Apple News in the U.S. starting in 2017.”

“NBCU will be the only company that can sell ad inventory that has historically been controlled by Apple, such as ad units that appear between stories or ads within search results on the mobile app,” Shields reports. “Apple will no longer sell any ads on the Apple News product.”

“Individual publishers can still sell ads that appear alongside content they distribute via the news app,” Shields reports. “While NBCU has the option to sell ads alongside publishers’ content, those news outlets can elect to opt out of the program.”

“There are 4,000 publishers currently distributing content via Apple News, which is now preinstalled on all Apple devices,” Shields reports. “Apple says that the news reading product has 70 million active monthly users, though it doesn’t disclose what defines an active user.”

“As part of the deal, NBCU won’t gain any access to either Apple user data or individual publishers’ audience datas,” Shields reports. “When buying ad space through NBCU, marketers won’t be able to cherry pick the publishers they want to run ads alongside… NBCU will sell and target ads using content categories like News or Sports.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple takes another step toward getting out of the business of directly selling ads (but not from profiting from ad placements).

    1. This feedback to RonB applies to all types of labels – conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, etc. – that are used as a shortcut to define people and even entire platforms of beliefs and attitudes.

You should consider just what that label means to you. What are you saying about yourself when you affiliate with that label?

You should consider your attitudes and beliefs that you lump under that label. Are you saddling yourself with viewpoints and biases defined by people/organizations who are seeking to promote their agendas for personal gain – power, fame, and money?

Are you such a simple, two-dimensional person that a one or two word label can even come close to being accurate? What beliefs/attitudes do you actual share with others who apply the same label to themselves? To what degree do you actually support all of the aspects of the platform of your chosen political party?

Labels are being used to divide America. They are being used as a tool to oversimplify a situation so that it can be more easily be attacked – label and disparage. Labels are being used to incite distrust and hatred among the populace. Ask yourself, “Who benefits from this chaos and gridlock within our government?” “Who is driving this division towards the extremes?”

The American people are being played, and the various people/organizations involved are all attempting to blame the others while claiming that virtue is on their side.

Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Rather than emphasizing the differences between you and others, seek to identify the similarities, the shared interests and goals. Promote compassion over disdain, cooperation over division, understanding over callousness disregard, reason over emotion, knowledge over ignorance, inclusion over exclusion

Do not allow yourself to be manipulated by the tools of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

Be willing to open yourself up to seriously contemplate different ways of thinking and different beliefs. They may have some merit.

      Exercise your humanity.
