Apple significantly lowers USB-C adapter prices in response to MacBook Pro complaints

“Apple is cutting prices for all of its USB-C adapters following a week of complaints about the MacBook Pro’s inconvenient port situation,” Jacob Kastrenakes reports for The Verge.

“The new MacBook Pro only has USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, so the vast majority of the peripherals people use today will need adapters to work,” Kastrenakes reports. “Someday, all those devices will likely use USB-C, but that day is not today and the Pro users interested in Apple’s new computers have been vocal about the problem.”

We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem. Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple’s USB-C adapters and cables. — Apple Inc. statement to The Verge

“Starting immediately, all of Apple’s USB-C adapters and some of its USB-C cables will have their prices cut by $6 to $20,” Kastrenakes reports. “Apple is also cutting prices by around 25 percent on all third-party USB-C peripherals that it sells. SanDisk’s USB-C SD card reader is getting a slightly steeper discount, from $49 to $29.”

    1. “We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition.”

Better late than never! Why did they not recognize it before making the decision?

So, Apple was like… “we removed all the MacBook pro ports your peripherals use today and, the dongles and cables for the new ports are expensive”.

  1. Ahhh, sorry Apple.

As I have been saying for weeks — we need a truck MacPro laptop and desktop.

Heavier, thicker and full of ports so we eliminate the extra purchases, or “Apple tax” as a previous MDN poster astutely noted.

The obsession with thinness needs to end, again, sorry.

    Do it all!

Apple owner since my Lisa …

  2. Look at the connectivity we lost…

MagSafe. <- Dongle needed to duplicate functionality
USA-A 3.0 <- Dongle needed or hub to convert to USB type A connector
HDMI <- Dongle needed for USB-C to HDMI
Display Port. <- Dongle needed for USB-C to DisplayPort
SD Card <- Dongle needed for USB-C to USB type A connector to camera, or get a card reader
Thunderbolt Connectors <- Dongle needed for Thunderbolt via USB-C
TOSLink Digital Audio connector <- Dongle needed (if available) or get gear for new USB-C connection
Ethernet. <- Port is not used that much anymore, but nice to have.

The ability to connect an iPhone to a new MacBook Pro without buying a dongle or a new USB-C to Lightning cable.

    It's all about the dongles.

What bonehead decided not to include a single old USB type A port on it, at least for a year or two?

    1. I have a 4 year old rMBP (1st gen). I rarely use the ports and the main use for them has been when traveling. So all the adapters I need are in my laptop bag. Cost me less than $100.
Figure out what you need, get them and have them when you are on the move. If you need them at home get additional ones for that situation.

        1. I have had multiple Macs in my day and my 1st gen rMBP is still going strong and looks brilliant. It’s over 4 years old and the only issue is that the battery needs replacing. Not bad for a machine that probably gets 4+ hours use a day.
So the trade off so having to buy a few dongles is a machine that is light, more powerful than the PCs (i7s as well) I have at work and so reliable it is truly amazing.
That machine cost me $2200 in 2012 and I will probably be using it for another 4 years. Maybe not my primary machine but certainly as a replacement for my aging 2009 Mac Mini media server.
If I am going to complain about the new MBPs it is about the size of the SSD in the base model. 250GB is not enough and for my new machine I will need to pay $200 to upgrade to 500GB.

        2. Right…he has a good story to tell and you yell at him for being an apologist because he does not agree with your negative outlook.

This is Apple and the Apple community, not the “with us or against us” of McCarthy and George Bush. People can disagree with you and still be reasonable…even right.

So kiss off with your crap. I am sick and tired of the Apple attackers on this forum. Bunch of freaking whiny babies. Go buy your damn PC and shut up.

        3. Oh and McCarthy and George Bush comment — what the HELL does that have to do with overpriced dongles, adapters, lack of ports, etc?

You are clearly off your rocker, Melvin.

    2. Apple reveals new MBPro with 4 state of the art USB-C/thunderbolt ports. Better, faster, more versatile. People bitch about dongles.
Apple lowers price on dongles. People bitch about that too!
This new port is amazing and is clearly the port of the future. Think of the dongle as a small “bleeding edge” tax. There are plenty on amazon. I just bought several USB to USB-C aluminum “dongles” (really just a cable end) for 8 bucks. Got a few other special case ones as well for video, ethernet and a USB-C magsafe (magsafe is the only one I was bummed to lose). All in all less than 100 bucks. I spent that much in 2012 for dongles for ethernet, FW 800, DVI and VGA

  3. We all know how much Cook has relied on adapter revenue and gouging Apple consumers for as much money as he can (which increases with each hobbled, locked down, unbuyable product this incompetent has the nerve try and pitch).

Having said all that, this price decrease is nominal and purely for show. Cook is mortified that Apple consumers now know exactly who he is and they also realize that he can NEVER be trusted.

It’s time for Apple to end this charade and get real and effective leadership; as opposed to continuing to support an incompetent and greedy clown who abuses Apple consumers by ripping them off every single chance he gets.

      1. Why?

They should lower prices but why would you say that they are suppose to lower prices on next macbook pro.

Trump is teaching us don’t pay for anything, or just pay what want. Apple better wise up.

  4. And should those of us who ordered the USB C-to-USB adapter at the higher price with our new MBP on Intro Day and took delivery on the adapter on Tuesday 11/1 expect an adjustment of some kind?

    Hello? Is this on?

  5. So, either Apple was truly so blind as to not realize that asking customers to spend potentially over a hundred dollars on dongles and adapters to use their current peripherals was dumb, or it indeed a money grab.
I have to say, the recent “innovation” from Apple has me greatly disappointed. All they seem to care about is making things thinner and lighter. I’m sure there’s some innovative engineering that goes into doing that. But I, and apparently many others, are getting a strong impression that Apple cares less and less about traditional computers, and more and more about phones and tablets. Last time I checked, you still needed a “traditional” computer to create the apps and much of the content available to use and consume on mobile devices. And having a “traditional” computer sure works better for content creation, with the ability to have multiple large displays, than being hobbled by a single 5.whatever or 12.whatever screen.
It’s truly a shame, as for the first time in my life, thoughts of even *considering* a Windows PC are cropping up for my next computer. I’m not ready to do that yet, but I may just try my hand at a “Hackintosh” some day, since all Apple seems to care about is non-user maintainable, light weight, last-year’s tech devices.

  6. Thank you, Apple. This certainly doesn’t solve the tactical error in your product planning, but it eases the financial pain.

You could have avoided this mistake by learning from the dismal sales of the MacBook netbook. You didn’t have to jump whole hog to USB-C without keeping the important connectors around for a while longer.

  7. posted this earlier elsewhere:

    “Steve Jobs solution:

Mac Book line : entry level with some ports
(couple of models, lowest priced for real budget users with way lower specs )

Mac Book Air : very light weight with fewest ports for the Facebook Twitter warriors

Mac Book Pro : for heavy duty with large number of ports and extras. Thicker, Weighs more.

Clean Easy to Understand Product Placement.
    —–
    now we got confusion.
for more than a year the Mac Book had FEWER ports than the Air for example (how did the general consumer figure that one out when the AIR was supposed to be the ‘light’ version ? , even retailers like Best buy etc were confused…)

Now some Reviewers are calling the MBP the heir of the Air rather than the old MBP…

yes obsolete stuff should be removed like Floppy drives in PCs BUT the transition seems TOO FAST …

Apple should have kept the AIR line and made a second LUX version with the touch bar (Lightweight) and kept the MBPs with touch bar and Max features (Heavier).
They should build a lower cost Mac Book model because entry to Mac land is very high now.

(Another reason why they should done what I suggest is that the NAMING : Air and MBP removes confusion. Now people are complaining that a ‘Pro’ model doesn’t have the required features)

stupidly CONSOLIDATING (turning MBPs into Airs) when Macs were making Billions (even more than iPad and way more than Watch) and outpacing PC growth for years (until recently with confusion and no updates) is the wrong strategy.

    (I have an older MBP)”

  8. The other insult is one nobody mentions. They omitted the power cord. Yes, there’s an adapter, but you have to plug a big heavy brick into the wall or spend $19 more to get one of their proprietary cables.

  9. Here’s an idea – Apple you obviously don’t understand what the Mac is for, or what pro users want.

So – buy Adobe and then spin them off as a separate company and give them the Mac hardware to develop.

That way you can continue making your skinny phones and pro users can go back to work knowing that they can just get on with their jobs instead of having to shift to Windows.

  10. If I am reading this correctly, this is a limited time offer till the end of the year. So we will hush the complaints while you can’t even get the new Machine and almost immediately after it is available in quantity we will jack the price back up. Si even if you are planning to wait a few months to get the new machine order you dongles now.
