Apple unveils new ‘TV’ app for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad

Apple today introduced the new TV app, offering a unified experience for discovering and accessing TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad. The TV app provides one place to access TV shows and movies, as well as a place to discover new content to watch. Apple also introduced a new Siri feature for Apple TV that lets viewers tune in directly to live news and sporting events across their apps. Watching TV shows and movies across Apple devices has never been easier.

“Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a statement. “The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”

Key Features Within the TV App Include:

Watch Now: Watch Now is where viewers will see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes® and apps. From Watch Now, viewers can then go to Up Next or Recommended to choose what to watch.

Up Next: Users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching, including recent iTunes rentals and purchases — all presented in the order they are most likely to watch first. For example, when viewers finish an episode, the next one will automatically appear at the start of the Up Next queue, as will any new episodes as they become available. At any time, users can simply ask Siri to continue watching a show and immediately pick up where they left off.

Recommended: Viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, including collections handpicked by Apple’s curators, and dedicated categories and genres such as kids, sci-fi and comedy.

Library: Viewers can access their entire collection of iTunes movies and TV shows that they have rented or purchased on iTunes.

Store: If users are looking for something new, they can check out the Store to discover great new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to, along with the latest releases on iTunes.

The TV app will be available for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and always stays in sync so that when users begin watching on one device they can easily continue where they left off on their Apple devices.

Live Tune-In With Siri

Siri continues to gain powerful new capabilities, including making it really easy to tune right to live news and sporting events on Apple TV. Siri is now aware of live sporting events across apps so users can simply say things like, “Watch the Stanford game” or “Which games are on right now?” Siri knows additional details of the games, can provide live scores and can take viewers directly to the live stream within the app that’s carrying it. Viewers can also tune directly to live video by just saying the name of the app, for example “Watch CBS News” without having to navigate to the live stream from within the app.

Single Sign-On for Pay-TV Apps

In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will have a simplified way of enjoying their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to DIRECTV, DISH Network and more will just sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to enjoy immediate access to apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.

Since its introduction just a year ago, the latest Apple TV has revolutionized the experience in the living room with 8,000 apps, including 2,000 games and 1,600 video apps, across categories such as sports, news, fitness, education, kids, lifestyle and more.

Availability

The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV (4th generation), iPhone and iPad customers in the US. Live tune-in with Siri is available today. For more information, please visit: apple.com/tv. Features are subject to change and only apply to participating apps. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages.

MacDailyNews Take: No 4K. In 2016. Ludicrous.

    1. I tend to agree, so no new desktops or mini and yet no previous intermediate upgrade to get them through to new year when hopefully they will be introduced. The great always tinged by a certain disappointment bolted into these events these days.

  1. My takeaway: Great new MacBook Pros. Touch Bar is much more efficient than touchscreen and a fabulous addition. Login from touch bar great. Single sign-in, on appleTV, barely mentioned, will save a lot of hassle, major improvement. The presentation was really lackluster. Tim constantly looking at (the teleprompter on) the floor; a really uninvolved audience; what felt like a cramped space. It just didn’t feel like “Apple” for some reason. Felt forced. Little excitement.

    1. I don’t generally agree with Theresa Poletti but her article yesterday (“Apple’s Underwhelming Mac Event Was Lacking In Innovation”) seemed pretty spot-on. The [cramped] audience looked befuddled (Ahrends frequently seen squirming in her seat) , Tim had to read everything and the MacBooks – except for the new touch bar – were really pretty meh. My Late 2012 MBP has an i7 processor, 8GB RAM, and dual 1TB SSD. So, for me, the only compelling reason to buy a new MBP would be for the touch bar.

  2. The new TV app is a nice touch. But I’ll be using it on my iPhone and iPad until Apple makes the ATV 4K compliant. I refuse to sink money on something that’s already obsolete.

Fortunately I can now think about a shiny new MBP!

    1. Again spot on, as MDN says no 4K this year is an embarrassment I really would like to be a fly on the wall at times to yo try to understand their logic. Or should I say discover it, because it’s a mystery to me what it is, or where it’s hidden.

      1. Just a few years ago, everyone was all excited over 3D TV. If you were looking at the technical blogs, you’d have thought that Apple was late to the show and perhaps was doomed because they had not gotten into 3D TV. Although 4K is a possible thing, there is little content and what content we do have available to us is nearly never the right aspect ratio and looks stupendously bad. Now you want to add 4K into the mix and will have even more problems to get a good picture with the proper aspect ratio.

  3. The fact that Tim Cook again repeated that the future of TV is Apps is the same as Microsoft under Ballmer stating Developers Developers Developers and never designing its own equipment to show the world how it is done like the New Microsoft is. Also no Apple Monitor again? No update on the Pro model after Microsofts product annc. Apple is coasting on Steve Jobs legacy and that wave is hitting the beach. Awful presentation. Apple needs new management and Vision. What a waste when everything is changing now. Will be interesting to see how the market reacts to Google today compared to Apple. Disappointing. No Apple branded monitor? Really?

    1. We’re not gonna be seeing a new Apple designed monitor anytime soon.

That was the whole reason for Phil hawking the new LG monitor in his presentation.

I found that quite disappointing. Oh well…

    2. Strange how people are so easily impressed with competitor launches than Apple ones, higher expectations I guess. Dimple fact is if Apple had launched that new surface PC it would have been met with shaking heads and not in a good way, all style over substance at a great cost and no expandability all those things that Apple gets it in the neck for. Not disappointed with what was launched today simply with what was not. After all the Apple TV uses others content which it attempts to organise in a PB efficient user friendly way. The surface PC uses others content but makes no attempt to do the latter. Yet it is deemed to show its creator in a better light in terms of thinking. Funny old logic, talk about emperors clothes.

  4. Eddie Cueless says anything? No thanks.

4K TVs will be the rage this Christmas season and Apple is peddling Favorites and curated (marketing hidden as suggestions) shows on 720 & 1080 HD. Mac users get no desktop and a ribbon! for extra $.

Steve Jobs has left the building and the Children of Jobs are wandering in the Wilderness – hopefully not for 40 years.

  5. This was the most lackluster disappointing reveal EVER! Cook looked about as excited as a concrete block. Microsoft is booming along now with some very real advantages and yet no Apple Pro or even an iMac. What are all these thousands of employees doing! They need a Steve Jobs to kick ass and develop something that “Just Works”, instead of iCloud that is pretty iffy at times. I had a number of old family photos disappear from Photo and iTunes is a total mess. I started with Apple with an Apple II in 1982 and have been with them ever since. I am now thinking of moving to another platform. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER APPLE!

    1. I keep trying to work out what these Microsoft advantages are, I might be some time as they have nothing that has inspired me at least in the real world. That said Cook is do damn uninspiring and the delays in new upgraded product is becoming rediculous on the Apple side none the less.

    2. Advantage 1) They are now chiseling into your professional network by buying LinkedIn. There is nothing I want more than for M$ to sell my customer list to my competitors by data mining my connection list and chat conversations.

  6. While you can get 4k Displays perhaps for cheap this Christmas, you still don’t have squat to watch.. 4K players are way to spendy, and there still isn’t that many 4K titles, and many many people do NOT have enough bandwidth to play 4K streams.. Wide Spread 4K is still a ways out there..

I live in real-ville, not fantasy land. Much of what 4K there is, looks really cool, but a lot of it is just not that great.
