Apple locations setting up line dividers overnight, suggesting new Macs may go on sale today

“Apple is holding its media event later today at 10 AM PT, where it is widely expected to announce a series of new Mac hardware including a new MacBook Pro. The rumor mill has not been clear about availability details for the new products, but Apple Stores appear to be readying for something new as soon as today,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac.

“A Reddit user has posted pictures of the San Francisco Apple Store where employees are setting up line dividers and measuring floor space as if they are preparing for a new in-store display of some kind,” Mayo reports. “This seems to suggest that the new Mac laptops (or something else?) may actually go on sale today, once the event is over.”

“The comment section on the thread indicates that this is happening at more than just the San Francisco Apple Store, at some of Apple’s larger retail locations,” Mayo reports. “Commenters say that the ‘line’ has been setup at a stores in Hawaii and Indianapolis too.”

“It is possible that Apple merely sets up marketing displays for the MacBook Pro inside the store so people can come and try them out, with the line gating the flow of people around the store,” Mayo writes. “Another possibility is that Apple is going to surprise with an unexpected new product…”

MacDailyNews Take: Queues for something other than iPhones or iPads would be highly unusual although it did happen in places with the release of the original MacBook Air.

  1. What surprises me is that the ‘hello again’ moniker has not been predicated to indicate a new device as a competitor to the Amazon Echo.

Just like the original Mac debut that spoke to the world, this ‘hello, again’ could certainly lead to the unveiling of a ‘hello, Siri’ HomeKit device.

    1. Because historically (the last 15 years anyway) new shifts in products have always taken place at apple HQ. think original iPod, original iBook, intel processor transition, iPhone se last year, OS X Cheeta, etc..

  2. If you have a store nearby that have the new 55 foot screens, they will likely have it playing in the stores, too.

    I know if I didn’t have a meeting, that’s where I’d be 🙂

      1. As Apple coasts, this is becoming less of a difference every day. The reality is that Windows has had a rocky history but is now better than ever in capability and effectiveness. OS X, err macOS, on the other hand, does absolutely nothing better or more efficiently than Snow Leopard did in 2009. Windows has improved its underlying file system, Apple is just now finally working on it. Windows has been miles ahead in graphics standards, with all the GPU makers supporting. Apple has been consistently a day late and more than a dollar short.

Face it, Apple under Cook has become an iOS one trick pony while the Mac has fallen way behind. A cute oled bar isn’t going to change that.

        1. As a Mac guy from way, way back, I hate to say this, but I have to agree with some of what you say… at least indoor first paragraph.

I’ve been reading some Surface Studio user reviews and it is just about the perfect device for graphic arts pros. They love it. It makes using a iPad Pro and a Mac look like the kludgest solution you could imagine.

Unless Apple has something like it up their sleeves, they are going to take a real hit in that market.

      1. I would say Apple gives not a shit if you pray, play, lay or stay. Sad to say, but my next purchase will likely be a Windows 10 Professional Machine that has slots and ports.

I have been with Apple since before the Mac and did not have to switch from Windows. We helped keep the lights on until the company turned around buying PowerMacs and such.

Apple appears to be determined to turn the Mac into a throwaway sealed up consumer iToi you replace like shoes.

        1. I may not be far behind you sadly. I think the fantasy scenario is to start to get knee deep and settled in on the dark side – and THEN Apple brings us the Mac Pro of our dreams. The Big D’Oh! But that’s probably just more dreaming.

I do like this Touch bar functionality and I wonder if they’re going to make a Touch Bar exterior keyboard for other Macs?
