Apple ‘iPhone 8’ models to feature 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays, no 5-inch version, source says

“Contrary to reports on Wednesday claiming Apple intends to release three new iPhone models in 2017, including a middle-of-the-road 5-inch iteration, a source tells AppleInsider immediate plans are to stick with the usual 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch flagships,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.

“Current plans for ‘iPhone 8’ include a ‘glass sandwich’ chassis incorporating an AMOLED display, though fallback designs are also being explored, the person said. While initial structural tests on early prototypes appear to be promising, Apple is readying backup contingencies in parallel with primary development,” Campbell reports. “A report from Nikkei earlier today claimed Apple is looking to market three iPhone models for the handset’s big ten-year anniversary. In particular, supply chain sources intimated work on 4.7-, 5- and 5.5-inch display sizes.”

Campbell reports, “Perhaps more plausible for 2017 than a 5-inch ‘iPhone 8’ is a refreshed iPhone SE.”

MacDailyNews Take: Can we please finally have edge-to-edge displays on iPhones in 2017? Hopefully, that’s not to much to ask, as it’d result in the same size displays, but markedly smaller, more pocketable iPhones.

  1. MDN spot on lets start losing those damn overhangs, other phones are presently getting there sooner and its about time Apple led on these matters rather than follow as they have of late. Yes we want it right but we used to get so much not only right but often first too.

    1. An iPh that could be safely carried sans case and a screen that would function well in bright sun, please. Liquid Metal would be super. Thank you.
Oh, one more thing…a Mac Mini Maestro. Thank you again.

  2. And while I’m here bitching about the absence of a new Mac Pro in today’s presentation, I might as well bitch about the size of next year’s iPhone 8.

What about a 4″ model? Come on, guys and gals. I think your obsession with some things comes from your SillyCon Valley echo chamber where “everyone” at all the in parties only use large phones while only the unwashed losers use small phones and therefore APPLE would never want to produce a small phone that only losers buy.

Come on, APPLE-people. Small IS beautiful, and it’s cool. Make a 4″ iPhone 8.

Oh, and while you are at it, shrink the size of the old Mac Pro box (not the trash can!) and turn it into a mini rack system, develop nano-blades using the A10 or A11 chip, and create a low power-consumption, cluster, super computer for number crunching academic geeks! Come on!!

You might not sell very many but you will be the talk in certain circles that crave this type of machine. Laptops just don’t cut it for certain work. Think of it as your gift to the academic/scientific world and view it as a write-off. Own the high end of desktop computing.
