“The age of Apple’s Mac lineup has become a topic of frequent conversation (slash punchline) among tech journalists and commentators lately,” Andrew Cunningham writes for Ars Technica. “The oft-referenced MacRumors Buyers Guide has been a constellation of big, red ‘DON’T BUY’ labels for months, and it’s because we’ve only gotten one Mac update since October of 2015.”
“That’s all set to change on Thursday when Apple takes the wraps off its new Macs at an event in Cupertino,” Cunningham writes. “Events at Apple’s Cupertino campus tend to be smaller and more focused than the big blowouts at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium or Apple’s other favored off-campus venues. So you can bet that the company is going to talk about the Mac and nothing but the Mac for at least an hour.”
“We’ve been hearing about new MacBook Pros from various sources all year, and Apple just leaked images of it in a new macOS update earlier this week. It looks like a major update that adds some all-new stuff and brings in a few iPhone innovations to boot,” Cunningham writes. “Here’s where things start to get muddled. By all accounts, Apple is planning to introduce a third new laptop alongside the 13-inch and 15-inch Pros. Three new Mac model numbers were registered in the Eurasian Economic Commission’s database earlier this week. What the rumors can’t agree on is the form that third laptop will take.”

I’m starting to wonder if Microsoft is positioning itself as the new creative professionals’ choice (naturally, MDN hasn’t reported on this)
They are trying to. Watching their commercial where they draw with a stylus with their hand unable to rest on the screen shows they are not really ready.

Drawing on a vertical screen, or even using touch, completely sucks just as Apple has always said. I bought a 13 inch iPad Pro with a Logitech keyboard as a travel laptop replacement. When using it with the keyboard I’m constantly frustrated when I have to do anything on the screen. A trackpad or keyboard command would be a hell of a lot more efficient. If you are creative, a Wacom tablet makes much more sense to interface with a PC
I have my iPad Air in a Zagg keyboard case and it works really well for writing when I can’t take my MBP.
It sucked last week, though, when I was stuck using it on vacation. I was trying to update my WordPress site’s PrettyLinks and constantly switching tabs in Safari and copying and pasting. I couldn’t wait to get back home and use a laptop.
This isn’t a vertical (-only) screen, though:
“it can slide up and down on the device’s hinge so that users can nearly flatten its orientation for the sake of drawing”.
In other words, very near the orientation you’d set an iPad Pro to for drawing. My artist friends always draw on an angled table anyway, so “nearly flatten” would be just fine for them.
None of you even looked at M$’s new iMac destroyer have you?
I have. Still doesn’t appeal to me, but I don’t work in a creative field so I can’t fairly judge the appeal for that application. I do know that I would be going through screen wipes by the crate full to get rid of fingerprints if I was using this.
Well that’s dumb.
I’m not a pilot so this new navigational tool is not going to appeal to me…..
How would this be different if you used it the same way you would an iPad Pro?
That Surface Dial is pretty innovative and a great development out of their earlier Surface Table accessories attempts.
wow, a downvote.. I don’t know of any other major company that has a non-pen device that you just place anywhere on the screen and interacts with what is there.
Well, while road Macs are good, a heap of us would like new Anchor Macs™.
Face it, Apple will never care about the professional ever again.
Their money is made from disposable electronic devices that we replace every year or two. That is the future for Apple.
It sucks. But the days of state of the art desktops from Apple are gone.
Sad but true. Tim Cook has shown nothing but utter contempt for creative professionals. THAT is his critical fault and will be what he is remembered for once he has been replaced, which can’t come soon enough.
Contempt? Really? Apathy, perhaps.
As long as one of these new laptops has an SD card slot and a head phone jack, I am buying it on day one.
A stupid OLED strip is not what MacBook users have been waiting for. Traditional mechanical keyboards are a thing of the past and a waste of space. We need detachable screens to use like big iPads.
Apple is becoming lazy.
If you don’t want a keyboard, what are you detaching your screen from? Apple already makes a big iPad, called the iPad Pro.
