Analyst: Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus still stocked out

“In case you were wondering how Apple’s iPhone is doing, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster is on the case, having canvassed 134 Apple retail shops in the U.S. about their in-store availability, and finding fewer have the item on hand than before,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“‘Our checks of 134 Apple Stores in the US show that only 40% of iPhone 7 SKUs were in stock (67% iPhone 7 and 14% iPhone 7 Plus).’ That figure is actually up from the 2.2% for the 7-Plus it was on October 7th, he notes, and up slightly from 11.7% on September 30th,” Ray reports. “Units in China are even more stocked-out… Inventory in China continues to be more constrained than in the US with around 12% total availability vs 40% in the US.”

Ray reports, “We continue to believe that the limited supply of the iPhone 7 should be positive for the Dec quarter outlook as demand shifts from September to December. Despite the supply, we remain comfortable with Sep revenue of $47.5B vs. Street of $46.5B.”

MacDailyNews Take: You know, because iPhone 7 is so “boring.” (smirk)

Calendar fourth quarter will set an all-new quarterly iPhone unit sales record. — MacDailyNews, August 8, 2016

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be Apple’s best iPhones ever. And iPhone sales will return to YOY unit sales growth in Apple’s fiscal 2017. — MacDailyNews, September 1, 2016

Once you identify the narrative, you can see it pervade throughout the media like watching dye in the bloodstream. It’s not real. The “iPhone will be boring” narrative may even have been planted by Apple PR (if they were doing their jobs, which we assume they were) in order to “set the bar” at a nice, easy level ahead of time. Under-promise and over-deliver. It all worked rather nicely as it is wont to do. Certainly, beleaguered Samsung’s self-inflicted gunshot to the head was also a nice little added bonus.MacDailyNews, September 19, 2016

  1. as smart phones grow smaller, faster and vastly more complex, steve jobs wisdom of absolute inhouse design integration vs samsung/android fragmented and sublet approach is once again proving the only way to assure quality, safety and elegant experience. I believe google pixel, galaxy notes, etc have risen to their level of corporate and technical incompetence and we will see many more recalls for going forward.
