“Apple will add all iPhone 4 models, the late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air, third-generation AirPort Extreme, and mid 2009 AirPort Time Capsule to its vintage and obsolete products list starting October 31, according to Japanese website Mac Otakara,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“Apple already obsoleted CDMA models of the iPhone 4 around the world last month,” Rossignol reports, “while the late 2010 MacBook Air joins the mid 2009 iMac, 2010 Mac mini, and mid 2010 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro among Apple’s recently obsoleted notebooks.”
“The current MacBook Air has not been updated in 584 days,” Rossignol reports. “Refreshed models with USB-C ports are expected later this month at the earliest.”

Do you mean using “obsolete” as a verb? Strange. If so, I agree, the headline should have said “obsolesce.”

No, though that’s good spotting; I didn’t notice that.
I was referring to the fact that most usages I’ve seen of the words “obsolete” and particularly “vintage” are more a general description of a product than a formal, time-based definition. A “vintage bookshelf” in an antique store, for example, or an “obsolete program” whose usefulness or relevance vanished a decade ago. This is my first encounter with a situation where there’s an established procedure for declaring when items meet criteria qualifying them for these terms.
How do I know if my Airport Extreme is 3rd generation?
When was the last time the Airport Extreme was updated and brought up to modern standards. My memory may be faulty but I can’t recall an update or new model in the last two years.
When does my iPod Hi-Fi get a firmware update?
My 3rd gen iPod (clickwheel?) 40GB still works great. Needing no firmware update!
I have a late 2009 17″ MBP, still going strong, replaced by my mid 2014 rMBP and I suppose my mid 2011 iMac 27″ will be next on the list. I have been holding out replacing that thing. I have already replaced the video card and screen. But that’s just it, you can replace those things. When it comes to newer models you don’t have the luxury of cracking it open without dealing with special adhesives and the like.
My Mac Pro G5 is in the closet, right next to my Mirror Doors G4. I put it there when I hadn’t turned it on in four years. Difficult to get rid of hardware I’ve spent so many hours with. In my mind they all still have so much value. I know it’s a problem. I will give them up in time. Like I did my Woz GS and my Apple //e.
The best place for those are in stories I tell my kids.
The way things are going, all of Apple’s computer’s will be on the obsolete list before they bring out new ones
(or maybe they are trying to prove the point that no-one wants computers anymore by not giving them anything newer than a 4 year old model to buy?)
