Beleaguered Samsung’s exploding phone cause may not just be about the battery

“Samsung Electronics Co.’s decision to halt production of its supposedly-safe Galaxy Note 7 replacements is raising doubts about the South Korean technology giant’s initial assertion that fires in some of the original devices were the fault of one battery supplier,” Jonathan Cheng and Eun-Young Jeong report for The Wall Street Journal.

“The company temporarily halted production of its troubled Galaxy Note 7, according to a person familiar with the matter, a little more than a month after announcing a global recall of 2.5 million smartphones,” Cheng and Jeong report. “When reports of battery irregularities began arising over the replacement phones, the company initially played them down. But now, the acknowledgment of potential problems turns a spotlight on whether the smartphone maker’s original diagnosis was correct.”

“Although Samsung has pinned the blame on one of its battery suppliers, battery experts and analysts say it is possible the Galaxy Note 7’s reported woes are the result of another component in the smartphone and not simply the battery itself,” Cheng and Jeong report. “Possible problems include the battery’s voltage control system and low-quality materials that go inside a battery cell, said Venkat Viswanathan, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. ‘Lithium-ion batteries have a very small failure rate,’ he said.”

  1. I see the Samsung apologists disappear when it comes to disasters like this. Do let me help them out in this case, this is how you spell Cook in Korean ‘Kwon Oh-hyun’. Perhaps they can supply the ‘I blame’ bit as they use it so monotonously.

        1. How about a few more centuries?

“Beleaguered” comes from a 1580’s word meaning besieged. So as long as people are using it correctly, its worth using.

“Beleaguered” as a concept and word is not beleaguered.

    1. MDN has applied the “beleaguered” label to one company after another as each one floundered. It’s now Samsung’s turn in the barrel. MDN won’t drop the gag until every last jackal has bitten the dust.

MDN has its peccadillos, some more objectionable than others: blood on the screen; thermonuclear bomb; Marissa cheesecake; Microsoft’s iPhone funeral; Amateur hour is over; Apple worth 7x, 10x, 13x Dell; etc. etc. — and the repetition does become tiresome, like playground taunts.

However, the “beleaguered” label speaks to an overpowering human conviction:— frowning at unfairness, rooting for the underdog, waiting for the moment of comeuppance, celebrating business karma each time it manifests. Revenge is amongst the oldest, and most satisfying, of all human instincts.
