10 must-read tricks for mastering your new Apple iPhone

“When Apple introduced its 3D Touch feature last year with the iPhone 6s, it didn’t exactly become a huge ‘screen saver,'” John Patrick Pullen writes for TIME Magazine. “Not many developers had advance access to the feature, which enables new app interactions based on how hard a user presses his or her iPhone’s screen. Eventually apps caught up, but the iPhone’s operating system itself still didn’t get the much out of the pressure-sensitive input.”

“That has now changed with Apple’s new iOS 10, which makes much better use out of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7’s 3D Touch feature,” Pullen writes. “But these invisible shortcuts can be hard to find without poking at the screen constantly.”

“Apple Music’s first incarnation was criticized as needlessly complex. Thankfully, a revision in iOS 10 has made it much easier to use. If you have an iPhone 6s or iPhone 7, it gets even simpler through the use of 3D Touch,” Pullen writes. “By pressing down on albums and tracks, a master menu pops up, providing quick access to features like adding tracks to your library or playlists or looking up lyrics.”

“Swiping up from the bottom of your iPhone’s home screen brings the Control Panel to the forefront. (It’s the place you go to put your iPhone in airplane mode or turn on the flashlight),” Pullen writes. “Pressing harder on the Flashlight, Timer, Calculator, and Camera buttons reveal a bunch of options for fine-tuning your phone.”

      1. Dont know, dont care. Never seen Spotify, have no interest in Spotify. I’m an Apple Music subscriber and have been since day 1.

Yes, I call it a miserable experience because IT IS. However, I suffer through it hoping one day Apple will get their sh!t together and fix this unmitigated mess.

  1. 3D touch and haptic feedback of clickless home button just doesn’t work well for me. I know I’m old fashioned and all, but I find this stuff takes much more time and concentration than it should. If I’m on the go, I find it MUCH easier to just hit a clear obvious button to go to the next screen/function/whatever than it is to swipe or hold with the right amount of force for the right amount of time. I just can’t get used to it. It’s not natural. Why can’t we turn off 3D Touch?

On my iPhone 7 plus, the Calculator doesn’t have a force touch option in the swipe up screen.
