Huge solar storm hurtling towards Earth could leave us without mobile phones, satellite TV and even electricity

“A HUGE solar storm is heading towards Earth which could leave us without mobile phones, satellite TV and even electricity,” Sean Martin reports for The Express. “Solar storms affect Earth’s technology as radiation is thrown at the planet from the Sun. While humans are protected from the radiation by the atmosphere, the rays can heat the outer atmosphere, causing it to expand which can affect satellites in orbit. That could lead to a lack of GPS navigation, mobile phone signal and satellite TV.”

“Furthermore, higher currents in the magnetosphere – the Earth’s magnetic field – could lead to a surge of electricity in power lines, which can blow out electrical transformers and power stations leading to a temporary loss of electricity in a region – although this usually only occurs in areas that are in high altitude,” Martin reports. “The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a coronal hole has opened on the Sun, leading to a stream of solar particles hurtling towards Earth.”

“As a result, Earth is expected to be hit by a swarm of particles in the coming days which, on a better note, could cause the Northern Lights to be visible,” Martin reports. “Mauro Messerotti, from the University of Trieste the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) warned that the hole ‘extends for about 30 per cent of the disk of the sun’ and that the structure ‘may persist for more than a month because these holes sometimes last for more than one full rotation of the sun, which lasts 28 days.'”

      1. Only an idiot would vote for a lying, corrupt “politician” directly responsible for the death of Americans. As bad as Trump might be, Hilderbeast is far, far worse.

        Liberalism is a mental disease

        1. People who think idiocy, dishonesty and corruption are ok from their favorite party but not from the other “evil” party have a mental disease / mental blindness called tribalism.

They are the reason why neither party feels any pressure to actually find inspiring candidates as apposed to career politicians/self-promoters.

With idiots like D making excuses for Trump, the Republican party, like the Democratic party, is never going to step up.

    1. For better or for worse, you’re getting Hillary.

For the life of me, I can’t understand how is it possible that, out of all possible candidates, and there were several that were quite strong, Republicans end up nominating the stupidest one? Any other one would have likely won against Clinton. This one? I can’t imagine what would have to happen over the next five weeks in order to make those swing voters pick him. And the Alicia Machado story isn’t helping either…

        1. You don’t have to talk to me like that, I hear you completely. What I’m saying is, from the conservative voter’s perspective, they had several candidates who were much better matches for their political preferences. Out of all those (Cruz, Rubio, Bush, Kasich…), they picked the only one who supports universal mandate, who opposes global trade agreements, who supports minimum wages, who supports gay rights and marriage equality, who rarely, if ever, goes to church…

        2. It’s time to put all Note 7’s in a sealed lead box and all large Samsung battery equipped products in the nearest concrete bunker.
Call your local municipality offices for more safety/disposal information.

        1. That was uncalled for, Kate. Republicans used to have principles. Sadly, the last truly great one was Eisenhower, and they have devolved into a bunch of angry greedy yelling blowhards since.

FACT: the current debt of the USA has piled up since Eisenhower under both corrupt parties, and the current republicans are the worst offenders in wasting taxpayer money.

      1. Anyone is better than Clinton! It will be more of the same and I’m not impressed with Obama. I’m not getting raises, worried about my job, everything is higher priced included health insurance so we can pay for dead beats. Time for a change, even if it’s with Trump!

      2. Your comment tells me you really don’t understand what’s going on in this country. Generally, people are disgusted with both Democrats and Republicans. They are lying sacks of trash. Those who go with Hillary accept this and apparently don’t care. Those who go with Trump want something different although, unsure whether or not that will really happen. The US government has been a disgrace for years now.

        1. I can understand the frustration, and the reaction is clearly not without precedent in America (anyone remember Jesse Ventura, governor of Minnesota?), but the fact that people are believing Trump, for whom independent fact-checkers say lies three times as much as any other candidate for office in history (close to 80% of all Trump says is not true), this tells me that a honest American who is frustrated with the state of politics and government can be easily conned by a smooth-talking liar. That is rather disappointing.

      3. Trump was not my choice, but his nomination proves that the voters are sick and tired of lying and corrupt pollitics as usual

As bad as he might be, nothing can ecplsin the stupidity of Hilderbeast supporters

        1. Your comments make no sense. You claim because Hillary is a bad candidate that it doesn’t matter how bad Trump is.

The reality is that Hillary is only likely to win because swing voters consider her a bit less unwholesome than Trump, not because they “support” her.

The idiots are those who point fingers at one candidate and not both.

      4. You cannot be stupid and be a billionair. He worked hard to build his business. He has far more common sense than any Democrat in office. Hillary has none, maybe because it would force her to tell the truth-and that is a foreign and alien idea for her since it is also pathological lying. If Hillary got elected, I believe there would be quite a bit of civil disobedience and open rebellion against her corrupt administration. She tries to portray herself as just another average American. But it does not work. Most of the people are not stupid, but one will not find far leaning dems in this group. I think the best we can do is pray to God that she does not win. Obumma is as corrupt as Hillary. Obumma was the warning from God, Hillary will be the real punishment for America if we can’t get things turned around and live a moralistic life. Morals derive it’s meaning from God. Without God, morals are meaningless.

        1. You call out Hillary on her lies. If you really cared about lies you would be slamming both candidates, and Trump actually tells more.

Then you bring up God. Wow. You do realize Trump doesn’t have any of those morals you are going on about.

They are both bad. Maybe its too disheartening for most people to recognize that so they recreate to a position where they excuse the poor behaviors of one candidate in order not too feel too depressed. But reality is this election is a low point for both parties.

        2. No, you can’t. And nobody intelligent is calling Trump stupid. However, he is a liar of a far greater magnitude than ANY politician in history, he is profoundly immoral and he lacks any human compassion.

His business was built on swindling and conning other people. He would hire contractors, then refuse to pay, and then when they sue, he would settle for a lot less than the original bid. What he calls shrewd business, normal and moral person calls it dishonest and morally corrupt.

He invoked fifth amendment 97 times during a single deposition (during his divorce, on questions about his infidelities with his mistress), and then boasted about that. Let’s not forget, he cheated on each of his wives with much younger women, whom he married after divorcing the old one. His current wife is nearing the age at which he divorced prior ones, so I suppose we can expect him finding a mistress soon and divorcing Melania for the new, younger woman…

Independent fact-checking organisations have been tracking accuracy of political candidates for decades. Overall, the average percent of lying is between 20 – 30%; Hillary Clinton scores somewhere near the middle. Donald Trump is practically off the charts; of all the “facts” that he tells, almost 80% are simply incorrect; either lies, or made up.

There is only one reason a conservative will vote for Trump as president: because he is not Hillary Clinton. This gives Trump 40% of the electoral vote. The rest of the country will have a very hard time sending to the white house a man who is so thoroughly morally corrupt.

      1. “When are they going to get those fücking retärds out of here?”

The infamous words of Hillary Merkel – also known as Arkansas’ “Mother of the Year” in 1984 – when Hillary grew frustrated that handicapped children weren’t collecting their Easter eggs quickly enough on the lawn of the Arkansas governor’s mansion.

    2. botty keeps invoking the name Merkel.

Are the Germany people unhappy with Merkel’s leadership in terms of economic, trade, or defense? No, they are elated because Germany built an economy that works for all its citizens, not just the richest corrupt few.

What the German people do dislike is the fact that millions of Syrian refugees are flooding into Europe, the closest democratic countries they can find. You can pretend that this refugee crisis has an easy solution. It’s messy, it’s complicated, and it takes time to No leader, and certainly not Trump, would be able to resolve the humanitarian crisis. If your answer, like Trump, is to let millions of innocent people die in a war zone, then you are not a christian and aren’t worthy to be elected dog catcher. If your answer is to stir up the hornet’s nest in Syria by sending in troops, then you would be committing the exact same mistakes the Bush presidents made — at enormous taxpayer expense and loss of American lives.

Does Trump have any plan for the future? No, all he does is complain that everyone before him, both democrat and republican, did a bad job. Except Putin, who is propping up the morally corrupt Syrian regime. Trump loves Putin because he talks tough.

      Wow.

      1. I agree totally! Trump is just too damn rich And immature. And “Trump” spelled backwards is “Pmurt”, which rhymes with “Hurt”, and he would badly “Pmurt” this country in office. He is an immature brat who mocks everyone. He has ideals of cutting finances from all of the more important resources the country needs in communities and feeding the industries from the National Debt. And he acted against the immigrants in that topic as well; they have to work too, you know. Why do people still support this guy?

      2. At some point, the world will say, ‘Stop, enough already. No more’. Then arms will be taken up against the muslims. There is no such thing as a moderate muslim. If one does not belive this, then I suggest you read the quran. I have. It is every muslim’s responsibly to convert the infidels. If they won’t convert then you kill them. The Quran makes this perfectly clear, not to mention the atrocities that come with shria law.

        1. I know many moderate Muslims. You should understand that the Quran and Bible have many similarities, in that they are very old texts, and many of the things in those texts make no sense today.

For example, the Bible commands quite a few things that no Christian of today would consider christian:

Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.

Eating shellfish: All that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.

Discrimination against the disabled: Whosoever … hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God. For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous, Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded, Or crookback, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken … He shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries.

Against women: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent”

No tatoos or piercings: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”

Working on a Sunday: “Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.”

There are many such passages that are no longer relevant. Quran has similar passages.

Believe me, there are plenty urban, well educated, moderate Muslims who have no desire to convert or kill anyone, and who still go relatively regularly to their mosque.

    3. Are you going to hack every story here?
I don’t care if you are a Republican or a secret Democrat trying to make the Republicans look bad, if so, you are doing a good job.
Just go away, you are not wanted here.

    1. It is a bit fishy that this article is from the Express (UK) website. And nothing out of the ordinary on the NOAA or NASA web sites.

On a hunch, I did a search for “Express UK bigfoot”.
They do have an article with some hazy video, asking “Is this Bigfoot in a British nature preserve?”

    2. The lack of big-time excitement on my regular source for things of this nature, spaceweather.com (which I’ve been referring to since the solar maximum back around 2001) tells me that this is just a hype piece/clickbait. The intensity of the “storm” is middling relative to some of the bigger X-class solar flares we got back then.

When the knowledgeable folks at spaceweather.com (and other reputable space science resources) start to worry about all of our fancy modern gadgets, then I’ll be concerned. Till then, I’ll be jealous of the folks up in Iceland who are getting some pretty good Aurora borealis right now.

  1. I’m more nervous about the Yellowstone caldera blowing and life as we know it ending worldwide. Or the San Andreas fault finally ripping loose with untold amounts of underground energy and devastation topping 8.3 or much higher on the Richter scale.

A little more problematic than the temporary interruption of cell phone service via solar storms.

    1. I dare say (that with our reliance on the internet: the “internet of things”; the promulgation of the cloud for nearly everything; social media; self-driving cars; etc; etc.) this has the potential to greatly affect “life as we know it” (or very much use to at any rate).

      Or some.

Can you imagine how many millennials, the selfie generation, and those younger will act with disrupted (or totally absent) phone service? How helpless many of them will be?

And it isn’t just them. Try buying something , anything, at almost any store. Who uses cash? And that’s if you can find a retail establishment that doesn’t use electronic registers.

Provided, of course, this situation is accurately reported.

    1. It isn’t that good. The Express basically has three headlines that it rotates. Number one is the disaster that will kill us all, two is the medical breakthrough that will save us all, and three is how immigrants are to blame for everything. Really just a waste of ink and wood pulp.

  2. I’ve seen more intense storms, meaning the Bz was tilted lower and the Kp higher, but the durations were shorter. Even so, there could be some satellite disruptions and maybe very sporadic transformer issues. If the storm intensifies then there could be cause to worry. I don’t see doom proclaimed on either of these sources:

    http://www.solarham.net

    http://spaceweather.com

I’ll check some other sources and report back if anything needs to be updated.

    1. I got some great photos of the aurora borealis here in coastal North Norfolk, UK – which is unusual this far south at this time of year, a few weeks ago when it first began flaring.
Anecdotally, a friend who has his own solar observatory, reckons it has increased in size though is more compact in shape this time around.
Time to find my tripod again.

  3. We have known about these dangers for many years. There have been calls to spend the $12 billion (a pittance compared to the potential losses) to harden the grid and other critical infrastructure from both natural and man-made EMPs, store protected redundancies (parts), etc… But, CEOs, who are paid not to think farther into the future than their next bonus have resisted spending the money. We keep doing the same dumb stuff over and over again. Everything has a cost – inaction in particular.

  4. The blizzard of 1988 knocked-out all telephone and telegraph communications and from that experience, the telecoms finally came around to undergrounding cables. Space events like this could well spur further progress. The military has been working this issue since the 1970s.

  5. This reads like sensationalist yellow journalism to me instead of something from a peer-reviewed science journal. If this is true, then how come I haven’t heard of this until I came to MDN? Something this serious should have been reported by NASA at this point. I’m sorry, but I’m not buying this.
