“A HUGE solar storm is heading towards Earth which could leave us without mobile phones, satellite TV and even electricity,” Sean Martin reports for The Express. “Solar storms affect Earth’s technology as radiation is thrown at the planet from the Sun. While humans are protected from the radiation by the atmosphere, the rays can heat the outer atmosphere, causing it to expand which can affect satellites in orbit. That could lead to a lack of GPS navigation, mobile phone signal and satellite TV.”
“Furthermore, higher currents in the magnetosphere – the Earth’s magnetic field – could lead to a surge of electricity in power lines, which can blow out electrical transformers and power stations leading to a temporary loss of electricity in a region – although this usually only occurs in areas that are in high altitude,” Martin reports. “The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a coronal hole has opened on the Sun, leading to a stream of solar particles hurtling towards Earth.”
“As a result, Earth is expected to be hit by a swarm of particles in the coming days which, on a better note, could cause the Northern Lights to be visible,” Martin reports. “Mauro Messerotti, from the University of Trieste the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) warned that the hole ‘extends for about 30 per cent of the disk of the sun’ and that the structure ‘may persist for more than a month because these holes sometimes last for more than one full rotation of the sun, which lasts 28 days.'”

It is a bit fishy that this article is from the Express (UK) website. And nothing out of the ordinary on the NOAA or NASA web sites.
On a hunch, I did a search for “Express UK bigfoot”.
They do have an article with some hazy video, asking “Is this Bigfoot in a British nature preserve?”
The lack of big-time excitement on my regular source for things of this nature, spaceweather.com (which I’ve been referring to since the solar maximum back around 2001) tells me that this is just a hype piece/clickbait. The intensity of the “storm” is middling relative to some of the bigger X-class solar flares we got back then.
When the knowledgeable folks at spaceweather.com (and other reputable space science resources) start to worry about all of our fancy modern gadgets, then I’ll be concerned. Till then, I’ll be jealous of the folks up in Iceland who are getting some pretty good Aurora borealis right now.
You can follow the solar storm’s intensity and see the forecast on your Apple TV. There is an app for that called Solar Observatory. 🙂

I’m more nervous about the Yellowstone caldera blowing and life as we know it ending worldwide. Or the San Andreas fault finally ripping loose with untold amounts of underground energy and devastation topping 8.3 or much higher on the Richter scale.

I’ve seen more intense storms, meaning the Bz was tilted lower and the Kp higher, but the durations were shorter. Even so, there could be some satellite disruptions and maybe very sporadic transformer issues. If the storm intensifies then there could be cause to worry. I don’t see doom proclaimed on either of these sources:

I got some great photos of the aurora borealis here in coastal North Norfolk, UK – which is unusual this far south at this time of year, a few weeks ago when it first began flaring.
Anecdotally, a friend who has his own solar observatory, reckons it has increased in size though is more compact in shape this time around.
Time to find my tripod again.
We have known about these dangers for many years. There have been calls to spend the $12 billion (a pittance compared to the potential losses) to harden the grid and other critical infrastructure from both natural and man-made EMPs, store protected redundancies (parts), etc… But, CEOs, who are paid not to think farther into the future than their next bonus have resisted spending the money. We keep doing the same dumb stuff over and over again. Everything has a cost – inaction in particular.
The blizzard of 1988 knocked-out all telephone and telegraph communications and from that experience, the telecoms finally came around to undergrounding cables. Space events like this could well spur further progress. The military has been working this issue since the 1970s.
