McLaren spokesman said, “‘As you would expect, the nature of our brand means we regularly have confidential conversations with a wide range of parties, but we keep them confidential,'” Baldwin and Mukherjee report. “It reported that the automotive group could be valued at between 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) and 1.5 billion pounds.”

I agree with the MDN take. That carefully worded statement still allows for other possibilities without contradicting what was actually said.
The statement looks like a classic example of mis-direction.
You know apple could just want mechanical automotive designs. Something they do not know how to do. But if McLaren does that, the Apple car will be high dollar.
True McLaren are after all at the forefront of rather a lot of cutting edge technology that could be useful to Apple and Gordon Murray (and his team) is equally at home producing high tech super cars as he is innovative city cars, ‘cheap’ electric roadsters and even flatpack all terrain vehicles for third World countries. Not to mention the processes and constituent parts behind all these vehicles.
