I went a week without a headphone jack, and it was not good – because I stupidly threw away Apple’s adapter

“Having spent a week now with an iPhone 7 review unit, I can say that a headphone jack-less existence will annoy millions of people used to that port,” JP Mangalindan blathers for Yahoo Finance. “Apple tries to make that painful journey a wee bit easier by tossing in an adapter that plugs into the iPhone 7’s lightning port and lets you use your old earbuds and headphones.”

“The problem for me? I accidentally threw it out with the paper packaging the adapter came with,” Mangalindan explains. “Based on sheer principle, I refuse to fork over $9 for something I’ve taken for granted on every single iPhone I’ve owned since 2007.”

MacDailyNews Take: The fact that you’re a cheapskate moron is not Apple’s fault.

“I can’t listen to music through wired headphones and charge my phone at the same time,” Mangalindan explains. “I can’t use the pair of Lightning EarPods provided with the iPhone 7 to listen to music on or join my editors for Google Hangouts on my MacBook Pro, which still has that legacy headphone jack port.”

MacDailyNews Take: There’s an adapter for charging while listening, too, but alas it’s not free, not even for the morbidly obtuse. As for the latter, use the Lightning to Headphone Jack Adapter that Apple gave you with your iPhone… oh, wait, you threw it out.

“So now I carry two pairs of EarPods around: one for my phone and one for my computer,” Mangalindan explains. “It’s frustrating when I blindly rummage through my backpack at work only to come up with the wrong pair of earbuds.”

MacDailyNews Take: Too dense to keep them in separate backpack pockets, much less be able to remember which one is which.

Mangalindan writes, “I also finally threw down $150 for a pair of wireless PowerBeats 2 headphones on sale for running. Do I regret the purchase? Not really. The PowerBeats 2 are incredibly comfortable to wear, and the audio quality is good enough for my day-to-day needs. It’s also liberating to run cord-free.”

MacDailyNews Take: So, you won’t spend $9 for a replacement adapter that you threw in the trash, but you will drop $150 (on sale, of course) on new headphones? You’re really bowling us over with logic, JP.

“The tradeoff for these issues? A larger battery and bigger taptic engine in the iPhone 7 where the headphone jack used to be,” Mangalindan explains. “I don’t mind the former — I do in fact get an extra 1-2 hours of juice between charges because of it — but I couldn’t care less about the latter.”

Full mess here.

MacDailyNews Take: Actually, you not only get a bigger battery, you get a barometric vent (for measuring the altitude changes during your runs, among other things, JP) and a little something called splash-, water-, and dust-resistance with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529.

We await JP’s next article with bated breath: “I went a week with a pounding headache, and it was not good – because I kept hitting myself in the head with a hammer.”

    1. When I get depressed I think of people like this author who have to ‘makeup’ stuff to write or else!

      He doesn’t deserve any attention.

First of all, I got the power beats2 for free and they weren’t even worth that much. He spent $150 on garbage (yes, Beats are garbage), threw away the free adapter and complains to us about $9.

I’m not sure I believe any of it…. it’s probably just a creative way to come up with an article so he looks worthy of a job (to whomever hired him).

      1. All this angst over a technology that ,if once again the industry follows Apple’s lead, will not be offered in 2 – 3 years.

What I find incredibly amusing is that the number of people that will gladly give up the 3.5mm jack to get water resistance and much improved, more capable, earpods/headsets greatly outnumber (2, 3, 4, 5:1) the cry babies.

Apple did the right thing for the overwhelming majority of iPhone users, and the crybabies (in a year’s time) will have forgotten all about their complaints.

  1. You threw out the adapter that came with the phone and that is now Apple’s fault. YOu’re toooooo cheap to pay up for your STUPIDITY…..nice to see “clickbait” nature of your “headphone week” nightmare……I call BS totally……!!!!!

    1. He never said it was Apple’s fault. He said it was a mistake and he laments having to pay for something he has taken for granted before. People here including arrogant and insulting MDN writers need to chill and not be so goddamn defensive when someone complains about something they don’t like on an iPhone.

      1. While some people on this forum can get overly defensive regarding criticism of Apple products, I do not agree that this is such a case.

Mangalindan received the necessary adapter with his iPhone review unit, but he threw it away. In his review, he then proceeds to bitch about the problems he faces as a result of not having the adapter.

Think about that…he claims to be reviewing the iPhone 7, but “on principle” refuses to replace the adapter that he lost during the unpacking process through sheer stupidity?

In this case I have no problem at all with people dissing Mangalindan.

  2. So what was supposed to be a review of the iPhone turned into a review of his stupidity and pettiness? Why should I care about his very specific scenario?

I’m going to write a review about how crappy the call quality is when you forget to stop scuba diving before making phone calls.

    1. It wasn’t supposed to be an iPhone review. The article is titled “I went a week without a headphone jack, and it was not good” and that is exactly what it was about. His point is valid and lots of people will be annoyed like he was. Then they will get over like he admitted he probably will with time.

        1. If it was a review unit, why didn’t he contact Apple and ask for another adaptor? I rather imagine that Apple would readily replace it. They supplied the iPhone itself free, didn’t they? Why balk at $9? They wouldn’t. I smell a rat.

  3. >> “I can’t use the pair of Lightning EarPods provided with the iPhone 7 to listen to music on or join my editors for Google Hangouts on my MacBook Pro, which still has that legacy headphone jack port.”

    > MDN take: “use the Lightning to Headphone Jack Adapter that Apple gave you with your iPhone… oh, wait, you threw it out.”

This specific complaint is that the Macbook Pro only has a headphone jack, with no Lightning port for the new Lightning earbuds to plug into. So, the 3.5mm-to-Lightning jack would’ve done nothing to help even if he hadn’t thrown it out, he would need a an adapter to plug the Lightning Earpods into, to then connect to the MBP’s 3.5mm headphone port.

    1. But he laments that he has to carry two sets of EarPods. Thus he has both the Lightning and Headphone Jack style.

So, the 3.5mm-to-Lighting jack he tossed would have done just fine in allowing him to carry one set of EarPods (the 3.5mm ones he has) and allowed him to use them with the phone and the MBP.

  4. Large numbers of people use the included earbuds. They’re sorted because it comes with earbuds. People who use bluetooth devices are sorted because it still has bluetooth. People who use wired headphones are sorted because they get an adapter.
The only people who might have an issue are people who have multiple sets of headphones and who don’t want to buy multiple adapters (fair enough, only $9, but it’s all more stuff) AND who are incapable of swapping around the included one.
How many people is this actually going to be a problem for in the long run? Really, the change to lightning was a much bigger issue and who even gives a shit about that now?

  5. Holy Mac Daily Defensive! You missed that he said the phone is otherwise perfect and excellent etc.
Everyone here has made much bigger mistakes in their lives than accidentally throwing out a tiny adapter with the packaging, and you all know it. Does that make you stupid or an idiot ? NO!
Its hilarious how folks here insult and jumps on they guy for an easy mistake.
Also his reluctance to buy a replacement is out of PRINCIPLE ! That means he doesn’t care how cheap it is. Sounds like some folks here could use a few principles!

Most people do care about the latter. The new taptic engine enables the new Home Touch ID component so that the iPhone could be water resistant.

  7. I have a great pair of headphones,
    – Wireless, but cord can be used if out of battery
    – rechargeable
    – Noice cancelling
    – TWO BT DEVICES SIMULTANEOUSLY
    – I hear music form my mac, and can answer calls on iphone (sound is mixed), I could use continuity also, but sometimes i listen to my stereo at home, and answer calls
**PHILIPS SHB875NC*** less than 80 USD

  8. “The problem for me? I accidentally threw it out with the paper packaging the adapter came with,” Mangalindan explains. “Based on sheer principle, I refuse to fork over $9 for something I’ve taken for granted on every single iPhone I’ve owned since 2007″
Well, then how about forking over $9 for replacing something you threw out? Does that go against your sheer principles too?

    1. Actually, if it was a review unit and meant to go back, why did he throw ANYTHING away? None of it is his and he’s obliged to return it all. I’d take care to repackage it properly as I found it. Out of principle.

  9. Are you people kidding…the 1st world problem we have as we use our iPhone 7. I sit in a cafe drinking my coffee that is made with clean water and comfortable with AC. Then to get into my car to drive home to watch TV with reliable and consistent electricity.
If your biggest problem is your pissed that you lost a 3.5 jack on your phone…..wow you got a great life. The 3.5 jack is old tec and it needs to be replaced with the better tec. If you don’t like the change…..don’t buy a iPhone 7. It’s not like someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy an iphone 7.
