Professional photographer Benjamin Lowy puts Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus cutting-edge camera to the test

“How can you tell the photographer’s eye (and brain) from the power of the camera? Don’t even try,” Bloomberg News reports. “But do take a minute to cast your eye on these photos, which professional photographer Benjamin Lowy shot on the streets of New York with the iPhone 7 Plus before its release.”

“Lowy was smitten with the machine’s massive storage capacity (256 gigs if you max out your purchase) and the App Store’s robust lineup of editing programs. Edit your shoot on the subway home, right on your phone,” Bloomberg reports. “He loved the device’s pair of lenses, too, one a telephoto that transports you to your subject across space and time. Well, that’s what it feels like, and certainly what it looks like when you’re checking out your photos on the train.”

“Indeed, the portraits he shot seem ready to walk over and talk to you — or, as the case may be, give you a piece of their mind. One image captures four lives in an instant, setting them at the corners of the frame as if stuck in amber,” Bloomberg reports. “In others, the saturated reds, yellows, and greens of an urban farm stand vibrate with life, and sunset seen through a scuffed and dusty plastic scrim turns a carousel golden. You are there.”

MacDailyNews Take: The iPhone 7 Plus telephoto lens makes aa HUGE difference. We can’t wait for Apple’s portrait mode software update, but this is already the best camera ever made in any smartphone.

And, BTW: Consumer Reports knows photography like Samsung knows fireproofing.

  1. One of the less talked about enhancements for photographers with IOs 10’s Photos app is the image search facility.

When you leave your iPhone charging, but unused, it goes through your photo album and analyses what can be seen in the images. Use the search field near the top of the app and you can search using words like car, boat, sea, tree, ball, house, swing, etc.

The analysis is done entirely within your iPhone and the pictures are not sent to Apple or anybody else. Therefore your privacy is retained.

Previously I’ve only been able to search images by manually inputting details prior to searching. Having the iPhone do it automatically is totally brilliant.

Ummmm….I’ll take “Overwrought Prose for $500″…

  3. Such compelling pics from someone who knows the meaning of effective composition. Benjamin has skillfully shown us the imaging capabilities of the 7+.

I own the 6+. Judging from the dynamic range in these images, Apple has made a significant leap forward in the iPhone’s processing and image capture capability. Excited to try it soon!

  4. You guys are all clueless. All the images have a filter applied or were heavily post processed.

Don’t confused composition with camera quality. He’s a professional photographer who did massive process to make useable images. There is PLENTY wrong with those images.
