“I believe Apple’s next big iPhone release is going to feature augmented reality technology,” Tom Mainelli writes for Tech.pinions.
“Obviously, nobody at Apple has said anything about such a product. But the now shipping iPhone 7 Plus, complete with dual-camera technology, is the latest hint Apple is moving in THAT direction,” Mainelli writes. “This, along with several high-profile company purchases—Metaio in 2015 and PrimeSense in 2013—point to this technology eventually appearing in products. One more thing: Apple CEO Tim Cook can’t stop talking about how big an opportunity augmented reality represents.”
Mainelli writes, “My bet is, when Apple heads toward its next big hardware revision, we’ll see an iPhone (and maybe an iPad Pro) with AR capabilities.”

MacDailyNews Take: Given the success of such AR apps as Pokémon GO, we fully expect Apple to investigate the potential of augmented reality which has been so promising for so many years (think apps like Layar which we first tried on our iPhones back in October 2009) yet not fully realized to date.
As the trail of related articles below attests, Apple’s interest in virtual and augmented reality hasn’t exactly been a well-kept secret.

The untapped potential of two cameras is depth info. Sure, they are using this for some smarter image filters now, but with depth info, you can have characters be obscured by objects, map textures onto surfaces, etc. With knowledge of the world in 3D, AR becomes much more exciting. Not to mention 3D videos and photos at some point. Go Apple!
I’m sure this person doesn’t have a clue about Apple’s plans for the next iPhone.
I believe augmented reality is more useful to me than virtual reality. To be able to look at a sign in a foreign language and have it shown in English would be great. Or looking at a building and having information about it being shown. That would be nice.
Try ‘Word Lens’ in the App Store …
Apple has already perfected augmented reality. Every person in public, whether in a restaurant, walking down the street, attending a show (every audience watches the concert through their iPhones as they record it)… while on public transportation (even while operating private transportation!) the world is on their iPhones.
What more do you want? Is it even possible to use your iPhone more than you do now? Without somehow getting you to look at it while you are sleeping, there just aren’t many more hours in the day for Apple to work with!
