“Apple CEO Tim Cook has dismissed concerns consumers might have that his company’s new wireless headphones – dubbed AirPods – may fall out and become easily lost,” Paul Blake reports for Good Morning America.
“In a wide-ranging and exclusive interview with ABC News’ ‘Good Morning America’ set to air on Wednesday, Cook told Robin Roberts that he had used the new headphones in a number of scenarios without incident, including on a treadmill and while dancing,” Blake reports.
“Roberts joked with Cook that ABC News colleague Michael Strahan was convinced he was going to lose the new phones, which appear similar to Apple’s standard in-ear headphones, but connect wirelessly to the phone,” Blake reports. “The wireless ear buds are scheduled to go on sale in late October and cost $159.”

MacDailyNews Take: They’re extremely light. With no wires (weight and/or catching on things) to pull them out. That, along with their ear-shaped design, makes them stay in your ears far better than most people who’ve just seen photos seem to expect.
Again, as for the AirPods looking alien: Tape a pair of wires on the ends of each and you’ll see that they look very much like the type of earphones that everyone is very used to seeing by now (which, by the way, for those that remember, we weren’t used to seeing before iPod – people though those looked “alien,” too). We’ll all get used to the lack of wires soon enough.

I still think there’s a market for something to ensure they won’t fall out. Especially if you are in compromised environments where if you drop them you WILL lose them.
Or perhaps ear pod replacement insurance or packages with 3 ear pods that sell for $50 more.
Apple ear xxx’s were never my “go-to” because the fit of both buds/pods were terrible, unless I was stationary. Purchasing earskinz, for the “buds” increased usability significantly…though never enough to be used while exercising. Maybe they’d do it w/ the new pods w/o the wire weight?
Me neither though I’ve heard the fit of the Airpods is much better. I’m afraid I wear more conspicuous but better sounding more conventional lightweight headphones. I hate shoving earbuds in my ears anyway.
As with my pairs of EarPods, I’ll be using cheap foam covers on my AirPods. The covers keep them clean beneath AND they help keep them snuggly in my particular shape of ears. Here’s a link to what I get for cheap, 100x @~$5.
Ever heard of hearing aids? There are many configs – in the ear, over the ear, etc. A good over the ear set costs over $4k.
The first week I had mine I lost one out on the factory floor from bending over and looking at parts. Took two days to find it.
I wouldn’t sweat airpods.
I am not sweating it in the least, merely on the behalf of others who either can’t financially deal with a potential loss or the inconvenience of loss.
Are these things sweatproof?
The iPhone 7 is the tenth iPhone model (original, 3G, 3Gs, 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7). With practically every model, and especially since Jobs died, there was some “-gate” mini-scandal that got the blogosphere going for a while. From 3G “crackgate”, 3GS too-hot-to-handle, to “you’re holding it wrong” antennagate on 4, the Apple Maps, bendgate and now 3.5mm jack. Let us not forget the iOS 6 to 7 transition (5s) that caused seismic events of such magnitude that the Earth’s axis actually shifted by a fraction of a degree (or so it seemed at the time).
And yet, somehow, the world manages to learn to live on. Not only that, but Apple manages to break sales records.
Meanwhile, blogosphere moves on, in search of the next big “-gate” to bait for clicks…
Is anyone forcing anyone to buy the ear pod headphones? If people feel more secure with wired they should do wired. If they prefer wireless with a cord to hold them together and decrease risk of losing one, they should do that. The scary thing here is the image of Tim Cook dancing.
Video at 1:53 — she tries to plug the bottom tip of the headphones in the ear!!!! 🙂
They are too Andorian looking for me.
When using EarPods I frequently had problems when I accidentally pulled on the wires and the EarPods fell out. Going wireless eliminates that problem.
I agree. For me the most common cause of the Ear Pods falling our was from a snagged wire.
Wait a minute — I thought MDN hated the media and refused to believe anything that was reported on those liberal hacks over at ABC. Why the change of heart? Because ABC’s reporting is essentially an infomercial for one of its largest advertisers?
To be fair, I am sure that people who are currently okay with the existing Apple earbuds will be just fine for typical use with the Air Pods. Those iPhone 7 buyers who don’t like the default Apple design will need to cobble together a solution that works for them — maybe the included adapter will be enough, maybe not.
I just don’t think that many people are going to shell out $160 for AirPods. How many people use bluetooth headphones today? My experience with wireless headphones has been limited, but not positive.
I’ve never had a pair of pods that fits my ears. None. Ever. I have no doubt these will have the same issue. My ears must be some kind of weird shape.
OK David Pogue! We await your testing!
Geez, wireless PowerBeats have been out for years now, hasn’t anyone used these? I haven’t used my headphone jack for as long as I can remember, it’s a dinosaur as far as I’m concerned. I don’t understand why people are making this such a big deal. For me far more interesting are the upcoming BeatsX, in spite of their still being connected by a wire.
What a crock of advertising shite ‘the news’ is today…..
(than you, Disney!!)
The same way they (try to) sell Crooked Hillary to the many fools we we have in this country today.
