“Apple is pushing on with their smartwatch endeavors in the form of the Apple Watch Series 2,” Joshua Ho writes for AnandTech. “For the most part I would say that there isn’t a ton that can be said about the new watch in the context of a hands-on, but I figured that at least some discussion of the new ceramic casing would be interesting to see.”
“For those that are unaware of what this finish entails, the ceramic casing is much stiffer than stainless steel which makes it much harder to scratch and impervious to corrosion. It’s going to feel a lot more like glass rather than steel,” Ho writes. “However similar to glass, the ductility and malleability of ceramic is fairly low and if you really do something to damage the case it’s likely that it will shatter altogether rather than bend and deform.”
“The one interesting feature I found while playing with the Apple Watch was the ability to manually enable the water clearing speaker system, and when you do so it makes you turn the digital crown to activate the speakers and clear water from within the watch,” Ho writes. “The Apple Watch Series 2 goes on preorder starting September 9, and goes on sale September 16. Prices start at US$369.”

Really curious to see the watch “burp” out water, lol. Very organic and clever engineering! Can imagine the person who first brought this solution up at a meeting..wondering if he/she should say anything for fear of others thinking they are nuts, lol!
I wonder how the speaker is protected from corrosion and buildup like salt from the sea or chlorine…
The gold Apple Watch Edition, already limited due to high retail price, will become a true collectible. If technically possible, Apple should offer a service to retrofit it with the new internals.
Ah, the hell with ’em. If you could drop that much coin, buy a new one. Or pay someone to retro-fit the innards 😉
The point is, you can’t buy a new one. 🙂 That’s why it will become even more valuable, especially if Apple (or a third party) can upgrade the old tech with the new tech.
They won’t of course since they can’t also make it water resistant.
Apple Watch series 2 is a major step forward. The waterproofing and GPS are enough to go and make me buy one for the first time.
Contemplating too. For the first time.
I watched the Keynote, and struck me later was what a non-upgrade the Watch is. It was already effectively waterproof. Now it’s REALLY waterproof.
Things MIA – an always on time display like its competition, a thinner case, and a Facetime camera.
And doesn’t the base model cost $20 more now?
You don’t consider the performance of the new SOC and GPS an upgrade? And the water resistance claim is substantial. I went from “it’s okay to get a little water on it” to “good to 50 meters.”
As for MIA: Thinner case would have been nice; it actually got thicker. Facetime camera? Not interested. What still want to see is utilization of the special connector used in conjunction with specialized watch bands.
