“Microsoft announced in April that it would make the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit for Office 2016 for Mac,” Billy Steele reports for Engadget. “Well, the time has come.”
“The update is rolling out to those who are running Microsoft’s productivity suite on OS X,” Steele reports. “With this latest update, Office 2016 for Mac is making the permanent switch to 64-bit support which Microsoft says will boost performance and allow for new features.”
Steele reports, “This new update makes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote 64-bit for anyone running Retail, Office 365 Consumer, Office 365 Commercial, and Volume License installations of the software.”

Microsoft takes Office for Mac boldly into 2008.
But since 2008, I’ve gone mean and lean on the Mac to get the most done the fastest and that doesn’t happen with MSO.
Pages, Keynote and Numbers are damn good for the average report & calculations. OmniOutliner is simply a breeze compared to trying to have a functionally usable and reconfigurable outline in MSW. BBEdit (or TextWrangler for free) for cleaning up formatting on downloaded text from the web.
Mega applications that try to do everything are just too messy and complicated, taking too much time.
Well, good on Microsoft for delivering a nice speed update that’s ONLY A DECADE LATE.
Now, what was I saying about speed?
Will it finally mean Word or Excel will load in under 30 seconds on my 2015 iMac?
Sack of crap software. Wish I’d stuck with Office 2011.

It now takes 1 bounce to launch Word as opposed to 15-20. This is before the app is cached, i.e. right after restart.
My biggest problem with Office though is that they have ruined HTML signatures. If you create an HTML signature with a remote piece of artwork, a company logo for instance, Outlook displays the art twice now. Same as if you just pasted it in.
Next month, Microsoft will ship a device that puts thousands of songs right in your pocket.
Wait, they are only just now compiling it for 64 bit? What took them so long?

I thought it was already 64bit. Hah turns out, I was wrong. Anyway, MS still recomends 32bit office installs on windows x64. I wonder if this too will change.

Google Docs has pivot tables.
I regularly swap/edit manuscript documents with complex formatting, and require MS Office for consistency. Word opened in 7 secs before the update and opens in 7 secs. No difference and I didn’t expect any (2015 MBP). It’s never been slow or crashy, just shitty in the way it hides things you want to do in nested menus (bring back Word 95!). Pages etc. are better that way but aren’t fully compatible with Word or Excel (±pivot tables).
