Apple Music has blood on its play button: Samsung shutters Milk Music streaming service

“Samsung will close its U.S. mobile music service — Milk Music — next month,” Jon Russell reports for TechCrunch.

“Milk Music launched in 2014 as a service that is exclusively for Samsung devices, but has struggled to gain traction in the competitive space of music streaming,” Russell reports. “Samsung’s new strategy is to lean on existing music services, which is pretty logical when you consider (a) the vast sums of money being invested into streaming services (b) the competition, which includes Apple.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple Music, killer.

“Milk Music was never launched outside of the U.S., which is fairly indicative of its lack of adoption,” Russell reports. “The service will officially be shuttered on September 22.”

MacDailyNews Take: Floptastic! Another of Samsung’s Apple wannabes bites the dust. Can “Samsung Pay” be far behind?

Students, don’t forget the Apple Music student plan which discounts the service by 50 percent for those who are enrolled in an eligible college or university. More info here.

  1. “Milk Music launched in 2014 as a service that is exclusively for Samsung devices …”

Wishful thinking. The music app on Samsung used to be Beats, which Apple bought. Milk was supposed to be the replacement for Beats.

In any event, Samsung launched a bunch of services and apps to compete with the Google Play ones. None of them panned out, even in China where Google Play services are blocked. Even Samsung Pay has very low adoption and usage rates despite it offering better technology than Android Pay (and Apple Pay).

So declaring this an Apple Pay casualty when none of the Samsung wannabe services have panned out – most of which were pulled years ago – is wishful thinking.

  2. “Apple Music has blood on its play button”
Are you sick? “blood “? Now according to your, desperate for clicks, sick, slanderous mind, Apple is a murderous killer. Sick, Sick, Sick,Sick, etc. Such desperation!!!

  3. Wow! I didn’t know there was an option for students. $10 seemed excessive for me since I don’t often buy new music, but $5 I can’t pass up. I’ll be a student forever. I’m working on an MBA, then will work on my first Ph.D, second, and so on through death.

        1. Wrong. Conventional student loans are largely subsidised by taxpayers. If Kate’s not using them, she’s using privately funded grants, scholarships, or direct support from relatives. Also, 40 to 50 per cent of today’s American college students, whether or not they receive financial aid, work an average of 20 hours a week in addition to pursuing their studies which is a job in itself. Freeloader – not.
